 tlhdocTracy,

I have also been researching cordless drills.  Per posts on the old boards, the drill you profiled is powerful enough, minimum recommended was 350 in/lbs.  The other advise was to get one with metal gears as the plastic ones will strip out.

If you go to Home Depot or Lowes they have very nice displays that illustrate the metal gears in the DeWalts.  The DeWalts are on the expensive side, but I guess its like most anything else you get what you pay for.

tlhdocIt will probably work. For how long?? Don t know.

30 day return, buy it, try it and take it back if you don t like it.

Then you ll have part of the money for the DeWalt.[;)]

 tlhdocTracy -
Having a/c on your 12  roof like you do, I m thinking the torque isn t quite high enough for your PU.
If I had a/c and I really wanted to stay in the 18 volt range, I would get [link=http://www.dewalt.com/us/products/tool_detail.asp?productID=3186]this[/link] one or not bother.
Otherwise I would move up to a 24 volt with metal gears.
If you re going to buy one, you might as well get one that won t die after just 1 season.  It really takes a lot of torque to drill a roof up.  If you re not careful, as well as not having a torque handle, you could really hurt your wrists.

tlhdocJeff I have a 10 foot roof with an AC.

I still think a 10  roof with a/c would be putting a lot of stress on a drill with 390 lbs. of torque.
But hey, it s your money.  It might work just fine.  How much is it btw?

tlhdocTracy-I have been using that exact same drill for 3 years now with no problems on my Bayside s 12  roof. I recently had A/C installed and it still does the job. You should have no problems with that drill.

I fixed the name.  This is what I get when I am up way past my bed time.[:D]

The regular price at Amazon.com is $518.  They are now selling it for $169.99 with free shipping.  I think it is a discontinued model.

Dave if you were buying again would you buy that drill or something different?  How does the price I found compare with what you paid 3 years ago.  I am wondering if it ever sold for $518.

tlhdocA closer look at mine reveals that the model # is 884. I don t know if the 9 makes a differnce or not. $518?! Somebody bumped their head. Or at least they bumped up the price. I paid $220 for mine 3 years ago. At the time it was pretty much top of the line. Now you can probably find a 24 volt for a comperable price. $170 sounds like a good price to me for that drill. Your best bet is to shop around.

 tlhdocTracy,

I researched the drill in question a little.  Suggest you go to epinions.com and read the review there.  Reviewer marvels at the amount of torque this drill has.   Sounds like torque handle on a drill this powerful would be handy.

The thing the reviewer complained about was th NiCad bateries.  1) they are heavier than other rechargables 2) they have discharge memory, e.g. you need to completely deplete the charge prior to recharging.  Otherwise, they will expect recharging at same discharge level as last time.

Putzing around the internet, going price seems to be about $220.  Replacement battery runs right around $90!  Prior to purchasing I would check to see how readily available replacement batteries are.  If the model is being discontinued getting new batteries may be a problem.

tlhdocThanks for the info.  I think I will pass on it.[&:]
