On the advice of my doctor I got a pneumonia vaccination last week, right before leaving for a dog show/camping trip.  No immediate allergic reaction to the shot, but with 3 days I had a headache, sore throat and dry cough. Cut the trip short and came home a day early. The next day  I was in the ER with high fever and breathing problems.  No sign of pnuemonia on the xrays but I do have bronchitis.  Nothing is touching the night time coughing (not even the narcotic cough meds) and the predisone I am taking for this is keeping me up all night anyway.   I am not a happy camper. I am not any kind of camper right now.

Three other people I know have developed bronchitis within days of getting the pneumonia vaccination.  So here is the message--think twice before getting this STINKIN SHOT!!! (thats the steroids talking!)

wssfetchMy husband and I both had the shots and had no reactions to them.  My husband had pneumonia several times in the year before he had his and has not had it since.

wssfetchSorry to hear you got sick.  It could possibly be that you were already brewing or exposed to the bronchitis and the pneumonia shot inflamed it.  I worked for a doctor for several years and we would never administer the flu or pneumonia shot if a patient had sniffles or cough symptoms or had been directly exposed to someone who was ill.  Had them wait it out a week and then come in for shot.

wssfetch

wssfetchI must have already been exposed to something and then getting the vaccination just tipped me over the edge.  Spent another 4 hours in the ER again today--more breathing treatments, more xrays, more antibiotics injections and change in meds.  Tomorrow I see my regular doctor and may ask to be referred to a pulmonary specialist.  But I am hoping the new antibiotics will help.

wssfetchI am currently on day 25 of a really nasty cold.  Worst symptom is a terrible cough.  A very loose cough during the day, changing to that horrible tickly throat one during the night.  You know the kind.... you try desperately to stiffle the cough to avoid waking the spouse and end up with tears running down your face as you run from the room, coughing up a lung!   Yay!

wssfetchSue, I hope you starting to feel better, I went through that last winter, ain t it just so much fun. There were times I swore I was hacking up a lung (sorry for the graphic picture, but that s the only wayI can discribe it.

Cindy there s an old physicians saying that if you see the doctor the cold lasts 2 weeks and if you don t it ll linger for 14 days.  Since you re going on 25 days please go see the doctor, broncitis and other nasties don t go away by themselves.

wssfetchI had bronchitus at the height of tax season. Nothing would stop the cough and I swore I broke a rib- that s how painful it was. They put me on Zithromax, which cleared my lungs up but the cough lingered for several more days.

School officials ended up shutting some schools down in this area for several days due to a massive bronchitus outbreak and then strep throat a few weeks after that. It s just been one of those winters.

I hope everyone will be feeling better soon!

wssfetchI m usually reluctant to take shots like those anyways. I ve been running around the face of this earth just short of 50 years, and have contracted pneumonia only once in my lifetime! It s not like it s something that happens to me often enough to think I need some kind of prevention against it.

The flu may be another story, I ve taken a flu shot the last couple of years, but I think the last one I took actually gave me the flu, or a weak cousin of it...

wssfetch

wssfetchI am starting to feel better this week but still have a lot of congestion.  Last week I had to make a second trip to the ER for breathing difficulties.  I think I was in my doc s office every day getting breathing treatments so they just gave me my own nebulizer so I can do it at home twice a day.  But all the antibiotics have taken their toll.  Now I have something called BLACK TONGUE, not to be confused with the variation HAIRY BLACK TONGUE.  Yes, my tongue is black and feels like I had burned my mouth with hot food.  Caused by an overgrowth of bacteria and fungus from taking antibiotics and steroid (almost 2 weeks on the stuff so far).

Don t mess around with bronchitis.  If you are coughing up a lung, it is probably more than a cold.  Get help!!

 wssfetchSue,

Keep up the good work. Catch it early so it is not so hard on the body. I have been down this road to the next stage of astham. Have this bad now. I waited to long I guess.

wssfetchgot myself an appointment for later this afternoon.[:)][:o]

 wssfetchWhitestar,

This has been a real wakeup call for me. I really haven t taken my asthsma really seriously in the past since it seemed that the only time I really had a lot of problems was with a cold or sinus infection.  But duh!  I should have known better.  The key is control it all the time.  Believe me, I am going to be vigilant and get back into the routine.

Cindy, hope you are feeling better!

abbear

wssfetchFirst - there are people who will get reactions to these shots.  Hard to tell beforehand.  But for me, the shot was a godsend.  I had pneumonia 7 times over 7 years and have the scars on my lungs to prove it.  Once I got the shot it went away.  So it was good for me.

Second, I also have asthma.  If you have asthma and are not taking your medicine or not really being observant about your condition, let me tell you about my wake up call.  My youngest brother also had asthma, and noticed his meds were working as well as they should.  He had pretty bad asthma.  Note I said had.  He blew off getting the meds checked and suffocated from his asthma after calling 911.  They did not make it in time.

Often we look at taking care of ourselves or doing things like not fastening seat belts as an individual choice.  Screw that!  My brothers choice has had a devastating effect on those he left behind.  How many times after something terrible like this has happened have you heard," If only."

Please, don t ever put your self in a position that may leave people saying " If only"  about you.

I am stepping off the soapbox now.

wssfetch

wssfetchAbbear, I am really sorry to hear about your brother.  You are so right. Asthma is not something to take lightly.  Mine has been relatively mild, however I do suffer terribly from sinus infections and bronchitis and that exacerbates the asthma. I ve had the wake up call now and it has made me a believer in monitoring my own disease and meds and staying in touch with my doctor.  I just bought a new purse with internal pockets just the right size to hold my peak flow meter and my emergency puffer and Advair so that I will make sure I am never without them.
