I ll be camping at Silver River (nr. Ocala - north of Orlando), the newest Florida State Park, from November 22 - November 30 (Thanksgiving week) and have sent out notices to friends (single and married).  Pets OK.  We hope to do plenty of kayaking/canoeing.

I prepared a two-pager with information, available sites near me info, URLs etc. that is too long to post here.  Sooooo, if anyone would like to go for all or part of that time, please email me privately (sandykayak@yahoo.com) and I ll send you the " flyer."   Here s an excerpt:

<<Copyright: Florida Division of Recreation & Parks-Florida Division of Recreation & Parks
Description ...recently acquired by the Florida State Park System and today offers 5,000 acres of 14 distinct plant communities and nearly 10 miles of river frontage. The actual Silver Springs, a nearby attraction, is the headwater of Silver River, which flows into Oklawaha River and eventually the St. Johns River.

Attractions - This lovely new park offers folks of all ages a rewarding and relaxing outdoor experience. There are miles of trails, several overnight camping options, educational pursuits, and a peaceful large grassy area conducive for tossing down a blanket and enjoying an old-fashioned picnic. One of the most popular features of the park is the Silver River Museum and Education Center along with the Cracker Village. ...The facility is open to the public on weekends and holidays from 9 AM - 5 PM.

Recreation - Hiking, biking, camping, viewing exhibits, and partaking in special events are the primary recreations enjoyed at this new acquisition site. The special events include demonstrations and activities such as quilting, folk tales, blacksmithing, hayrides, antique engines, museum tours, antique automobiles, pony rides, Indian camp, Native American crafts, confederate encampment, and woodcarving. As of fall 2001, 6 cabins will be available for reservation. Other future plans include more trails and a full-service concession offering food, drinks, camping supplies along with canoe rental. >>

sandykayakI camped at Silver River SP in early April.  Very nice facility.  The park is a new acquisition for the state and they are were working on expanding the hiking/biking trails.  The rangers are wonderful and lead all kinds of activities including hikes and star gazing nights.  Restroom/bath houses are clean, modern, and generously sized and each has laundry facilities.  And one of the best parts is that the sites are laid out so that no one has any reason to walk through your site to get to anywhere else!  Each site has water, electric, picnic table, fire ring and grill and is semi-shaded.  And only $15/night!  We loved it!  Easy drive to Orlando, Daytona, Cape Canaveral.

 Jennifer,

It took us 13 hours to go from Coppell to Destin, FL. a few years ago.  I have no idea how much further in Ocala is.  Wouldn t think it d be more than a few hours, though.
