I have a BAL Leveler I use with my Coleman Utah.  An excellent product which I wouldn t leave home without!  What I m wondering is why this product cannot be used on a 2-axel RV.  Well, not a really big one, but, say, the Antigua by Starcraft or one of the other 19-21 foot hybrids with double axels.  I know the manufacturer says it is for single axel trailers, but if a double axel is within the weight limit, and who knows what it really is since BAL won t say, it seems it would work.  Have seen double axel RV s using one of those curved wedge type levelers you pull/back on that roll and raise one of the two wheels on a side, so what s the difference?  Reason I m wondering is I have a friend with a double axel hybrid who likes the BAL and neither he nor I can see why it wouldn t work since his hybrid doesn t weigh any more than some PUs.

Am wondering if maybe it has to do with the tension being on just one of the two axels?  But then, those wedge levels or even the Lynx levelers just raise one of the two axels.  Hmmmmmmm.

Perhaps some of you guys who are more into the mechanics of trailering, weight distribution, etc., would care to shed some light.  Will appreciate any insight.

WayfarerI read somewhere in a BAL flyer that they could be used, but they need to be used for both axles. In other words two axles, two BAL s. Having been under a lot of TT s and seen the different axle & suspension arrangements and the vastly differing weights supported by dual axles I can see why they want two of them.
Otherwise the first time some yahoo tried to raise his 6000 pound trailer with one and it snapped and took out his kneecap, he be sueing for product liability and he d win. Stupidity doesn t count against you in most courts today unfortunately.

WayfarerThanks for the info, Mike.  I understand about the 6,000# RV and definitely wouldn t try raising only one wheel, but what I m wondering about is something like the Starcraft Antiqua at 2900# or one of the Terry s or other ultra lite Hybrids which mostly weigh in around 3,000 +/- a few.  Any ideas on something in that range?

WayfarerAgain even though the trailers lighter than some of the single axle ones, you d have to get the suspension specs. Putting the entire load on one axle might be overloading it. A lot of dual axle fairly light weight trailers use really light axles because they re spreading the weight out over two axles. Also some dual axle trailers have spring arrangements that wouldn t allow lifting with a single wheel. IMHO it would be up to the manufacturer of the trailer whether or not to use a single wheel to level.

WayfarerThe other thing is you would have to crank up both BAL s at the same time.  Essentially, crank one, then the other, then the first, etc.  I ll ebt they re afraid some yahoo would put one under each wheel, crank one wheel all the way up, and wonder what went wrong.
