Last fall, our DD#1 s dorm was struck by a tornado.  It was disruptive, but no one was seriously injured or killed.

She had another " close"  encounter last night.  Although the campus ([link=http://www.uu.edu]Union University[/link]) was untouched by the tornadoes, they did have considerable hail damage (hail varied from golf-ball to softball size).  That call came at 2:00 am EDT.

They had word that a tornado had touched down in the downtown area, but she didn t know how bad it was.  When the local cable station got back on the air mid-morning today (Monday), they were shocked.  There is no more downtown Jackson, TN.  The word she used was " splinters" .

She two people in Jackson were killed.  There were 10-11 killed county-wide.  They are in a state of Emergency and the National Guard has been activated.

The campus has power, phone, cable & internet, but is without water.  Most of the town does not have power or phone, and nobody has water.  The University is tied into an emergency power circuit with a nearby local hospital.

The local newspaper will publish today, using the University s press.

She told PJay " Someone doesn t want me here."   I know for her that means " God has me here for a reason."

AustinBostonMy parents live about 35 miles from Union University. I called them this morning to check on them; they were fine. They had no idea about the bad stuff in Jackson. It was sorta funny: Although Ma and Pa had bad storms, they were somewhat oblivious to what was going on so near to them.

It hailed here pretty bad too (just south of Nashville). The lightning was unbelievable too. Holly and I were up for a couple of hours watching the storms thru the windows and on TV.

brainpauseI almost forgot...DD said she got some excellent videotape of lightning Sunday Night.  She is looking forward to showing it to us.

AustinBostonI just watched the weather channel when I came home from work.  Be careful everyone in that area.  Brainpause, I seen your post where you were on the web.  Once again

 AustinBostonAustin,

I m glad your daughter was not hurt.  I have never actually been in a tornado but came close one spring when I was about 3 miles away from an actual touchdown.  I was at a barn training a horse for a friend (in an indoor arena) and had no idea how bad of a storm was brewing outside.  I thought it was just a nasty storm.  I didn t find out about the tornado touching down until a day later!!  YIKES......!![:o][:o] That was a wakeup call for me.  Now, no matter where I am, I make sure I have a radio with me at all times just in case of nasty weather.

I think tornados are fascinating to watch on TV, but I wouldn t want to be in one and even worse, I would dread the thought of hearing that maybe one of my family or friends was in one.  Once again, I m glad your daughter is okay.....Give her a big hug next time you see her and tell her that you love her[;)][:)]

AustinBostonGlad everything is OK with your daughter.

This is a good time to remind everyone that a battery powered weather radio is a good investment at your home and PU.  If you get one look for one with S.A.M.E. technology.  It allows you to get alerts only for the county you are in.

AustinBostonI drove through downtown Jackson around 6 p.m. last night....just hours ahead of that tornado.  The TV video looks pretty bad.  Somehow I missed the one last fall but I was also traveling through during the one in 1999.  I think maybe it would be best if I stayed out of Jackson from now on.[:D]  At any rate, I m very relieved that your daughter is safe.  This has been an eventful freshman year, eh?
