I m going to pick up our new to us PU wednesday and it doesn t have a hot water heater.  I would like your opinions on this tankless water heater.  I may or may not get one depending on your responces.

 What do ya think?

I haven t checked the pricing yet.  That is also a consideration.  It may be high.

Starcraft DadI ve got the same concern as you. IMHO I ll bet the price is about $300.
One other thing that I m not exactly mad about is the actual temperature of the water. Without their $110 optional " Cold Weather Kit"  at the normal 2gpm we see in PU s there is about a 50 degree difference between water temp in and water temp out. While this may be OK where the input water comes in at 70 degrees it s not going to be a great shower provider when the water temp in spring or fall or those really cold well supplies give you water at 40 degrees.

Starcraft DadI am very curious about the price.  I am guessing it cost more than a standard hot water heater.

Starcraft DadInteresting, but I would suspect, as the rest of you guys, that it will be pricey.

Let us know, Starcraft Dad, when you find out.

Starcraft DadI have used the on demand water heaters in gast houses in Germany. The ones we used were efficient enough.

Turn Key

Starcraft DadDon t know anything on this make and model.  Can speak a bit about tankless heaters in general.  While stationed in England many years ago, we lived on base in a small trailer (about 33X8).  All of it s hotwater was supplied by a tankless heater.  It was nice in that you never ran out and the temps were very good.  Did notice that you could get the max temp a good bit higher by turning the faucet down and slowing the flow.  Didn t have to pay for the gas but I m betting that heater used a bunch.  You may want to take that into consideration.

Starcraft DadI have a tankless in my home, we did a remodel last year and that was a must! I like it a lot! I like the idea that I could turn the hot water on, walk away, and come back a month later and the temp would be the same.  I doubt that I would want one in the trailer though....I think the warm up time required would not make this an option that I would go for....pricewise, my home unit was not much more than a good quality tank type ($450) and it has a great warranty.  Like Turn Key pointed out, the characteristics are little different over tank types, such as slower flow is hotter water, it is tankless hot water, NOT instant hot water, but, it is very energy efficient as it only heats water when and as you need it.

 Starcraft DadStarcraft Dad,

Before implementing our water heater configuration, I looked closely at this model and found it very pricey. You can pick one up for $775, add $105 for the cold climate package and then pick out a nice door for another $45-65!

A standard water pump puts out about 3.8 gallons of water per minute. This model likes 2 gallons per minute, so they re assuming you ll mix a lot of their 115 degree water with cold. (City water is 4-5gpm).

Better to have a dealer of the new type popup install a water heater that belongs in it. A 6-gallon Suburban heater, installed, will probably set you back about $400. Add about another $100 for a mixer faucet, pump, hoses and fittings.

Starcraft DadThanks for your advice.  I m not getting one right now (planned winter mods) but just wanted everyones advice.  I will be going with the normal tanked water heaters.  The tankless is way to much.

And with your heater, get a dual mode (gas/electric) heater, it makes the water hot faster when you have hook-ups because the electric can get thing heating right away.  I will not even run the gas sometimes, as the electric element has the water heated just fine.
