When posting a year or so ago I came across a link to a company that made a bike rack made from pvc and would hold up to six bikes.  Does anyone know the link?  And does anyone have expereince with this rack?

The only problem I have seen with pvc bike racks is their general tendancy to sag with age. Don t know if that is a problem with this unit or not. Most of the ones I have seen have been home built.

degrootI made my own pvc rack based on the sixnall design.  Actually, after I saw the photos of the sixnall, someone else here who made his own pvc rack told me about the photos on his own website that showed detailed close-up photos and even had a parts list for what you need to make it!  I wish I could remember who it was!

With my own rack, I made some modifications that made construction much simpler, although it added considerable weight.  I used t-connectors instead of drilling holes to connect the long runner pieces.  I m not worried about the weight on the roof, as the weight of the unit is even distributed at several points on the roof.  The weight of the bikes doesn t add to the weight of the bike rack because the bikes don t actually sit on the bike rack.  The rack is more of a scaffolding around the bikes.  The bikes rest directly on the roof.

The rack is strapped to the roof with sturdy ratcheting tie-down straps.  We use two from side to side and one front to back to prevent any shifting towards the rear.  The bikes are held to the rack with bungees.  When everything is in place, nothing budges.

I made mine in a 3/2 split design.  Makes it more managable to put it on in 2 pieces.  Also makes it possible to use only a small 2 bike unit or use the other 3 bike unit if we don t plan on taking all 5 bikes.  It also is great for carrying other things like coolers, chairs, etc.  And even makes a perfect carrying rack for the canoe if we decide to take it!!!

Another handy feature us that at the campsite it make a great free-standing bike rack.  The kids bikes are never left lying around and the bikes can easily be secured to the rack with a cable/chain and lock.  No more worrying if the bikes will still be there when we return from our day trip.

 And the best part is....

SO MANY people come up to us and ask us about it!   It s a great way to meet new people.  And when they start asking the DH about it... I love to see the looks on their faces when DH calls out to me, telling me someone is asking about the bike rack I made!

I have a digital camera now so if you want me to send you pics of our model, just let me know!

I haven t had any problem with this, but I also used  beefier, larger sized pvc pipes to make my own.

degrootThis is the one I use.  It works very well.  You can always modify it to fit your needs.

degrootI have a six n all bike rack and like it. I got a split rack. With my AC on top. I got a 3  2 split rack. Which means I have two racks one rack holds 3 bikes and the other holds two. They can both be taken or only one if I do not want to take as many bikes. Two weekends ago I went camping with only one son because the others had other plans and I only took my two place rack. Its really light and you can see out the back mirror much better.  The rack was delivered in about a week. There was some assembly. If you take the measurements of your campers roof they will tell you how many bikes you can take.
I like having the bike rack at the campsite, it keeps the bikes together. The racks are nice for taking other things besides bikes along. I like to take a small ladder along to help me put things in my car top carrier. Its good to put folding chairs and beach equipment on. I have had mine for two years and gone at least 7000 miles without a problem with the racks.

degrootCindy, I would like to see pictures.  Are they posted on a site that we can all go to, or do you need to e-mail them?

degrootI talked with a family this past weekend that uses an auxillary carrier for their bikes mounted on the front of the tow vehicle.

I added a couple of pictures at the bottom of [link=http://www.title-3.com/BikeRack.htm]my bike rack page[/link].
