Holly and I are leaving Saturday morning for an 8 day trip to LV and the Grand Canyon. We won t be camping, but will be staying in a timeshare for a few days, and then at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas.

Keep us in your prayers for safety, and we will be " MIA"  from the boards for about 10 days! (Unless, of course, my hotel room has  net access like in Hawaii).

brainpauseWill you be seeing the North Rim? (Is it even open yet?)  We stayed at the south rim for a few days, then drove the 250 miles to the north rim (which is only ten miles away, as the crow files).  90% of people who visit only visit the south rim.

The north rim is cooler because it is about 2,000 feet higher, and is covered with lodgepole or ponderosa pines (can t remember which).  It is far less desert-like than the south rim, and there are far fewer people.  If I could only return to one, I d go to the north rim.

This is great to hear, AB.  We are heading there this summer and decided to go to the North Rim....for many of the reasons you listed.  Sounds like we made a wise decision.  Thanks.

We stayed at the campground near the state park in Jacob Lake.  From there, it was an hour s drive to the north rim visitor s center.  They have the cooest National Park sign I have ever seen there.

We also took a day trip to Bryce Canyon NP, which is very different from the Grand Canyon, and is about two hours away.  Zion NP is also about two hours from Jacob Lake and is worth the drive, if you have time.

Jacob Lake is over 9,000 feet.  Be careful about strenuous physical activity until you ve been there for a day or two.  At those altitudes, every fifth breath makes up for what was missed in the previous four.  You won t feel it unless you start running or do other aerobic activity, but then you will tire easily and not easily be able to catch your breath.

One of the things I forgot to mention...the views are spectacular at the south rim, but at the north rim (specifically at Angel s Window, IIRC), the canyon actually wraps around you so that all you can see is canyon.

There is less to do at the north rim when it comes to touristy things, but to me those are not the reason for visiting the canyon.

Trivia:  Does anyone know how long the average visitor spends looking at the canyon?

 Answer later.

brainpauseI was lucky enough to take a two week Dory trip down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon a couple of years ago.  DH didn t go but I had a ball.  It was the first time I had ever camped or done any white water rafting.  The canyon is awesome and someday I hope to go back and see it from the top.  Did a lot of hiking when we stopped for the night.  The outfit that took us through were very good about making sure we had lots of time to explore.  Hope you enjoy your trip.

brainpauseWe will be seeing most of the places mentioned, except the north rim. Since we will be staying in Flagstaff, we will just see the south rim.

We will also be traveling to Utah, Arizona, and Nevada, so we have a lot of ground to cover!
