When you are sanitizing the pop-up water system, and it s been a while since you ve cleaned the system, don t forget to clean the screen filter in the faucet.

The last time we were going to use the pop-up, I injured my leg right before we left. Had to cancel the trip literally hours before leaving. That was three months ago, and we haven t been able to use the camper since.[:(] I forgot to drain the water system back then (admittedly, I couldn t walk, so it wasn t exactly foremost in my mind). So I m getting ready for our first trip of the year next week, and going about the usual pre-trip routine.

Yuck!  Drained the tank today, and slapped my head for forgetting to drain the system before. [:@] Lots of gross stuff came out of the tank drain. Did the whole bleach thingy to sanitize everything, drained the system, flushed the system again with water, and was about to mix a vinegar solution to get rid of the bleach smell, when I realized I hadn t yet cleaned the faucet screen filter. You don t wanna know what that looked like.[: (]

No wonder I couldn t get the water to flow fast through the faucet.

Bleached, scrubbed, and cleaned that little screen. Yeah, they are a dime a dozen, but I don t have another one handy right now.

Just thought I d point out that when you are cleaning a water system, clean everything: the tank, the water heater, the lines, the city water connection, the outside shower, and the galley faucet.... including the faucet filter. Cuz what you don t clean remains there to contaminate your drinking water, and that little filter catches all the stuff you were trying to eliminate from the fresh water system in the first place.

Ab Diver, once again the owner of a " mountain fresh"  water system. [:D]

Ab DiverRemind the guys at AquaFina to clean their water filter sometimes too!

 Good tip Ab!

Ab Diverhow does one get to this filter? Can you remove it, clean it, and then put it back? Heck, I just now discovered the draining mechanisms on the bottom of our camper.  Time to get owners manual out and reread some stuff.

Ab DiverIf you have an electric water pump make sure you clean the screen in it too.

JemJen unscrew the piece on the end of your faucet.  The screen will come out.  You can clean your screen on your home faucets too.

Thanks for pointing that out, Tracy. I forgot to mention that, as well as the water heater bypass kit (turn the valves a few times during each step so the bleach/vinegar/water solution has a chance to flush through the kit). This time, I *also* removed the water tank " equalizer tube"  that goes from one top portion of the tank to the other side. On my tank, each end has a higher portion than the middle part of the tank. This tube lets the air/water equalize so you can fill the tank all the way up. Due to the aforementioned long period of time it was left full, it was pretty cruddy as well. A little bleach and some high-pressure water cleaned it right out. Then I just put it back in place, tightened up the pipe clamps, and continued with the normal sanitizing ritual.
