Our favorite game is " No Guts No GLory"  a dice game with 5 dice - so easy to carry along - takes up little space and can be played by MANY.

 Here s how you play:
Roll all 5 dice together - sort out those that count towards your score and roll the remaining dice to see if they can become additional points
 .....
Three of any # is the hundred of that number (when rolled at the same time) except for 1 s they become the thousand of that number (when rolled together)
 5 s rolled alone count as 50 pts (but 3 5 s rolled together = 500)

The object of the game is to get to 5000 pts or 10,000 pts first.  To get " on board"  you need to roll 500pts.

 So if you roll 3 - 3 s and 2 5 s you have 400 pts (300 + 100) THEN you can roll all 5 dice and continue adding - HOWEVER...
If you roll 3 3 s (for example), a 2 and a 6 then you can roll the 2 and the 6 and count the 3 3 s as 300 - if the 2 and the 6 become 1 s or 5 s then you can add that to your score and continue to roll the 5 dice again.  When the last dice rolled does not end up as a 5 or a 1 you get a strike - if you get 3 strikes in consecutive order - you go back to zero!!  Thus " no guts no glory"   because when you roll those 3 3 s and have the two dice left to roll again - you can choose not to roll and keep the 300 pts or have the guts and see if those two dice become 1 s or 5 s...

We always reccomend that you keep the score and get rid of the strike at the next roll to avoid striking out...

First you get a quarter and bounce it in a cup..........[:)]

PopupnutWe play this too, call it Chicken.  The only thing differnet is that you have to roll 500 points to " get on the board"  (in other words, before your points start to count up)  And, the winner has to get to 1500 exactly, or else the have to deduct them.  If you have 1425 points and you roll a total of 200 points, you have to deduct the 200 from the 1425, bringing you back down to 1225.   (you end up playing for a whole long rainy day this way.)

 PopupnutToni,

I m so glad to hear you know this game - I figured it must have 100 s of names.  We play the same way -needing 500 points to get on the board.  My brothers used to play that you had to get to your final total exactly as well or else you could strike out!!!!  This sounds like your version!  Strategy is a tricky thing with this game!

My hope is that we can teach our friends on this board all the cool games (uncommon) and when we finally do meet - we can have tournies and play-off s!!!!  Just rainy day kinda fun!   There are so many nifty games out there - some of them, have been around for a long long time.

With the rain falling every weekend as it has for the last month or so - I think we could all use some new ideas for rainy day games!

 Thanks Toni!!

P.S. - I like the quarters game too - not very good at it from what I remember...

PopupnutI know another one with quarters, but don t know if it has a name.  It s best with a big family, or lots of friends.  Each person starts with 3 quarters (or pennies, or stones or toothpicks)  and there are 5 dice to start with as well.  You roll the dice, and if you roll any 3 s you put a quarter in the pot for each one, any 4 s you give a quarter to the person on your left and any 5 s a quarter to the person on your right.  The other numbers are all  free . After your first roll, when you throw all 5 dice, you can only throw the amount of quarters you have left.  (one quarter, one die, two quarters, two dice, etc.)     Last person left with any quarters wins the pot.   When your quarters are all gone, you can play one throw of the dice, " on your honor" , to give you a last chance to get a quarter back.  Since you are giving the quarters to the people next to you, you stand a good chance of getting them back, and the game can go on for a long time.    It s lots of fun, and we ve had groups who were all yelling for the number that would get the quarter to come in their direction.
