Well, we finally took our PU in for annual inspection, and asked them to look at the ABS roof while they had it. We ve had problems since early on with a little bit of bowing along one side near the back.

Also on our second outing ever last year tim5055 noticed at about 75 feet something I had never seen at close range ? a blister in the laminate.

Well, the dealer said they d take a look, and sure enough, one or both problems was enough to earn us a replacement. We brought the PU home today to put back in the garage to await the arrival of a new roof.

They seemed to think Coleman has enough ABS roofs in stock still and we won t see a new style. Doesn t bother me too much because I like the walnut resistence of the ABS, plus I m not excited about getting any new Coleman roof design in its first year or two. I think it s safe to say from experience that they don t always have all the bugs worked out when they release a new top.  [;)]

We figure we might still see a new style roof, if not this time, then next time. But hey, it s winter and we won t need it for another six or eight weeks yet.

There is a question in all of this: DW wants to know if the install is pretty straight forward, or is there a chance that we might have nagging problems after switching out such a major component?

springer02Just got my new roof back right before New Years.  Took it out & spent 4 days (New Years) at a little pond.  Ours looked basically the same, but the clothes hanger was mounted in the other direction & it has a little more bow, so gives more headroom.  The lights were a little different & turned a different direction.  Other than that, I don t see much difference, except it does bow when closed.  IT is ABS BTW.  We ll see how it stands up to our Las Vegas summers. [: (]

Going to open it up again for a Buegrass festival at the end of jan.  Can t wait.[:)][:)][:)]

Well Dave, I guess you and I think alike[;)].  The service manager at my dealer & I were talking and I said to hime it may take a while, but I will eventually end up with a new style roof.

Tell Tena not to worry.  The roof swap out is very painless (Yes, I have been through it).  They move all the parts form the old roof to the new roof.  So now is the time, if you don t like where the clothes rod, caddie or vanity hang - le tehm know.  They can put them anywhere you like.

I have not had any problems with my new roof.

I guess it depends on the shop, but mine took about 6 hours to switch.  I dropped it off at about 10AM and I was called just before closing that it was ready.

 Good luck

springer02Sorry to hear about the problems, but I am glad you are getting a new roof.

springer02Be glad you are getting a new roof.   We are having problems with our roof, and it appears that we may be stuck with it.

springer02Just had mine replaced in the beginning of Dec. My experience was almost identical to tim5055 s. I had them put on A/C. Don t worry about the curtains or valance if you are getting ABS. Mine all fit just the same as the old roof.

My only concern would be the curtains, I would  ask and make sure that everything is going to line up with them, it seems to me I remember someone saying somewhere a while ago about running  into this issue with a roof swap. It would be an easy fix either way, but you might want to check on that when you take it in for the swap. And yes you can request where clothes hangers and things are mounted so think about where you want things when you take it in.

 Lee,

Ihave heard this is only a problem if they are replacing the ABS with the new style " AlumaTite"  as the interior clearance is different in the newer roofs.

springer02In speaking to our dealer it was our understanding that our roof would be replaced with another ABS that as long as they still have them that is what you ll get. So I guess we have to wait for the new Alumitite roofs. I just don t know when,.....when they run out of the others, I guess. and with all the problems with the old ones...why bother? Won t they just double their work load having to keep replacing roofs?

springer02

springer02My understanding is that they just had a pretty good number of ABS roofs in the warehouse when they switched production to the new style. Supposedly they are/were still using the ABS for replacements until the supply was used up. Dealer said it wasn t used up yet, but, hey, for free we ll take whatever shows up.

springer02We had ours replaced last Mar when we were adding A/C & a roof rack. No problem with curtains, door or anything. You ll notice slight differences. I think you get more height with this 1/2 O ring seal version. Didn t take long to do the replacement at all and were all ready to camp in April with your nice VA group.

springer02My 98 Mesa had the roof replaced with a 2000 roof.

 1.  Check that the curtains hooks are the correct size.  Somehow the curtain hooks on the 98 seem a little larger for the 2000 roof and will sometimes become undone.

 2.  Also check that the canvas has been installed correctly, especialy near the door.  If the setup is the same on yours as on mine, there is a metal clip that is supposed to come down and hold the canvas in place.  Mine were not done correctly and resulted in the rubber at the top of the canvas to begin to tear.  I believe that there may also be some of these clips in the corners.

You may not have any problems at all but just a couple of heads up.

By the way, the new roof came with the clothes hangar already in it.  I had them move my old one near the sink to hold a towel.
