Well, finally got a chance to drive to this state park where we have reservations next weekend and it will probably be the last time I make reservations without visiting the CG first!!!
It s POURING rain yesterday, we drive in to the gate, I get out and say hello to the attendant there, who barely grunts an audible reply. I then explain that we are camping there this coming weekend and I had heard the sites were small and I wanted to make sure my camper would fit before towing it 3 hours on a Friday night. His reply was " I m sure the campers would love it if I let every car in that wanted to look at sites!"  I felt like asking him how many cars that was today, or even this year? two, maybe! But I held my tongue! (Unusual for me!) and he said yeah go ahead. After driving through the campground on a road that is about wide enough for 1 1/2 vehicles, we find the sites! Postage stamp sized sites! We re talking park the jeep wrong and the front bumper is on the site on one side and the back is on the site on the other! The loop that the map on the internet shows is simply the road going on both sides of the campground! I m leaning towards cancelling, my wife says give it a chance!

garym053If the attendant  was rude and the site is that small I would cancel and go to some place else.

 garym053garym053,

" " If the attendant was rude and the site is that small I would cancel and go to some place else." "

I agree with Tracy, mostly do to the size of the camp site.  Of course it was raining also... Just kidding!

garym053I would complain about this person.  I pay for him with my taxes.  Since my income is currently dependent on the state government, I feel that he can work by the same standards I do.  His behavior is working on getting the state park budget cut, and that is not acceptable.

If you don t like the park, don t go.  Why does your DW want to give it a chance?  Did she see some redeeming value that you might have missed?

garym053If you have a bad feeling about the campground, do NOT go.  I have found (from previous experience) that a bad feeling will only get worse.  You will look (and find) EVERYTHING that is wrong with a campground like that.  I have yet to not like a campground on first impression and then like it after the stay.

Maybe my first impressions are just VERY accurate! [8D]

garym053Thanks for the input! After I posted I thought " everyone is just going to think you re whining!"  Which, of course, I was, BUT!!!
If it was just us, I would convince my wife to cancel and go someplace else, but my BIL and SIL, and my SIL s Sister and BIL (Confused yet?) are joing us! I m not sure how we re going to fit 2 pop-ups and a tent, 3 automobles, 6 kayaks on 2 postage stamp sized sites!!!
When I made the reservations I thought this CG was fairly close to my wife s birth place and where many of her ancestors are buried, but after driving it, I found it is at least 1/2 an hour or more away!
This is the first time I ve ever been treated rudely when dealing with a state campground, or private for that matter!

 garym053Gary,

We camped there last summer in a tent.  We found the fellow campers to be friendly.  Most go there year after year.  As you probably noticed, the campground is on the Cold River.

Not far from the campground on the Cold River there is a nude beach.  There are a lot of voyares who want to park at the campground and hike through the woods to the river to get their jollies.

So usually they do not let none campers in.  They made an exception in your case, probably on account of the rain.

FYI, if there is a sudden thunder storm upstream from the campgrounds, quite a flood can come down the Cold River some hours later.  The weather is a little unsettled right now so be careful.

Our only real objection last year was that an orphaned bear cub kept running through the camp sites.  The park rangers strategy was to ride through and try to drive the cub back up into the woods.  They were trying to avoid trapping and relocating if at all possible.

Your description of the road and camp sites is very accurate.  I don t plan to take our popup there until I am much more proficent at backing.

Hope you and your family have a good time.

garym053Small sites, rude attendants...I vote with the majority...I d go somewhere else!  :>

garym053UPDATE! Well, despite the weather forecast and the prejudice I felt against the Mohwak Trail State Forest, WE WENT!
Check in was NOT by the same attendant that I spoke with last weekend, but by the camp hosts who were very pleasant! I did notice that they now have a sign saying no drive through allowed unless camping. That would have been all the other guy would have needed to say unstead of the rude way he put it.
ANYWAY, the campground is nice EXCEPT for the bathrooms! They smelled so bad of mold and mildew it almost made you sich to use them! The sites were clean, and while there are quite a few that are very small, the ones we had were large enough and not as bad as they first appeared. So I guess I would go back again, but would like to see them do some cleaning in the bathrooms. This must be an ongoing problem for Mass parks, as this is the 3rd one in a row that we ve stayed in over the last year or two that has had filthy bathrooms!
By The Way, I did see and speak to my " friend"  on Saturday! Asked him if he d heard if the weather was going to clear. His reply- I don t know! I didn t go into detail as to whether he meant he doesn t know if he heard it was going to clear or....
Anyway, for scenery I give it an 8 or 9, but the bathrooms would rate a 0 or a 1.
