In my old popup (2001 Coleman SeaPine) in hot weather the refrigerator struggled in hot outside temperatures. We are now considering a hybrid that has a refrigerator/freezer. Is the technology different? If not, how can the food stay frozen in hot weather when the refrigerator stays only moderately cold? Do you also recommend using an external fan to draw heat away from the coils?

Thanks in advance for your help.

GDSLTSThe technology is the same, but the size may make the difference. I was camping last weekend in 95§ temps with heat index of 105§ and the refrige in my Hybrid did a great job, and I was able to keep ice cream in the freezer as well as make ice cubes as needed.

Meanwhile, the Coleman Rio in the next site over (my old one) was having some problems with the refridge keeping anything cold. I went over and switch it from 125vac to propane and it did do much better, but just wasn t as effective as my big Refridge/Freezer. I believe the bigger units have more to work with, and since it works via heat absorbtion, the larger coils probably are more effective. The Class-A MH in the other site that was part of our group had no problems either, same Fridge/Freezer as my Hybrid.

GDSLTSYou might have noticed my post about our fridge problems.  Well another trip out and we found the big issue with the fridge/freezer was precooling.  For our last trip we added 4 2-liter bottles which we had prefrozen with water.  Made a huge difference and by morning of our first night everything in our freezer was frozen solid.  These big fridge/freezers are used by most the TT/5ers out there so you can figure they must wok or there would be a lot of ticked off campers.  We ve always been able to precool until we moved, before the move we took ice cream and made ice while we were out camping.  Using both electrical or propane we usually needed to turn the setting down from 9 to about 5 to keep the fridge from freezing too.
