We will be traveling  from Michigan to Orlando, FL (Fort Wilderness) in early August.  Our normal route is via I-75 (1200 miles).  AAA has advised us to take I-77 (1300 miles) because of heavy construction on I-75 from Michigan to Florida.  We have made this trip many times, and in the summer months there is always construction on I-75, but it has never been much of a problem as they usually are able to keep both lanes open.  I am looking for input from anyone who has travelled I-75 southbound recently to see how bad the delays (if any) really are.

 Thanks,
 Jim

mortjvI know that just north of Cincinnati around the I-275 loop there is construction going on to  widen the road. There have been daily delays there at rush hour times. Going through Kentucky there are spots of construction but most of the places have been in places where traffic is lite. Try going to the states Department of transportation web sites. Most of them hace construction updates and delays.

mortjvWell there is construction on I-40/75 south of Knoxville TN. and on I-75 just north of Chattanooga TN. Georgia has been widening the ramps, but that hasn t been to much of a problem. They have also been doing some bridge repair, doesn t last long but can be problematic.

mortjvSouth of Atlanta there is some const but not a real problem, blew through there this past June going to the Fort.

mortjvI ve been travelling I-75 from Cincinatti to Knoxville most of my life.  It seems that they have been doing construction constantly for the last 25 years.  You know that you are getting old if you can remember when the Interstate was finished!

Dayton Dave

mortjvWell, I can provide some input here for the Dayton area.  There is a major re-construction going on for the I70 and I75 interchange.  It is much needed.  I have followed this for a while and have traveled it many times.  So far it can be crowded but it always has been passable.  Just expect delays.  Here is a link to the Ohio DofT for more information.  http://www.dot.state.oh.us/dist7/70%2075%20interchange/default.htm

The construction north of Cincinatti has been extensive as well.  I have been caught in a lot of traffic going both ways.  I also work with folks that live down there and commute each day.  They seem to get here on time.

Just try to give yourself extra time and plenty of distance between them and you.

Dayton DaveDave, we re planning on heading up to Indian Lake this weekend (for the week).  Any suggestions, or just easier to stay to the main roads.

I don t think you will have any problems, it will be crowded on the highway, but should be OK.

I know that they had a lot of rain and flooding up by Indian Lake a couple of weeks ago.  Watch out for mosquitoes, take the bounce dryer sheets and let us know how they work (sp).  I would be interested in hearing back on the area after the rains.  That is a real nice area to camp, and I would hate to see it in rough shape.

Dayton DaveDave, any suggestions on what section/site to camp at (at Indian Lake)?

Jim in Michigan

mortjvI just took this exact trip a month ago.  The worst part was around Knoxville, TN.  We took a diversion just North of Knoxville that put us on mainly 4 lane road into north Georgia.  I don t remember the route because the DW was navigating but it is pretty apparent when you look at a map and it may have cost us an hour.  South of Atlanta there were some stretches of construction, when we encountered them there was always a serviceable route around them or the wait was fairly short.  Georgia was nice in that they gave you warning well in advance of the construction and told you exactly between what mile markers where they were.  As I said by looking at an atlas we were able to easily avoid them with little delay.

We did run into a problem in Dayton but that was mainly an accident in the middle of the construction.  We didn t have any problems on the way home, either in Knoxville or Dayton.

I couldn t imagine heading to Mouseland out of Michigan any other way than I75.  We ve taken that trip so many times, we can did it in our sleep so to speak.

Sorry, I can t help you there.  I have only driven thru the area and not camped there.  I will have to wait to hear the best sites from you.  [;)]

Dayton DaveDave, don t have the map with me now, but when you want to go, let me know and I ll be sure to bring in a map.  Of course the best sites are on the lake or channel.  Just some are better then others.

Fantastic place - we loved it.[:)][:)]

mortjvSome construction in and around Knoxville TN had traffic moving real slow last week.
