This campground is located near the Blue Ridge Parkway (it was a fifteen minute drive from the CG to the US 21 entrance) but has enough hiking trails to keep you in the CG itself for a weekend.  They do not take reservations.  There are no hookups but they do have lovely bathrooms with hot showers.  The shower stalls were huge with large dressing areas and a bench that ran the full length of the dressing area.  Plenty of room for clothing, etc.  There is also a sink located in the space between the men s and women s bathroom where you can wash your dishes.  Cost is $12/night unless you are old like us, then it is $10.  The sites on the inner ring were wooded with lots of privacy.  A few of these were not suitable for a PU.  I doubt if any of these sites would handle a big rig.  The sites in the outer ring were larger, less wooded (although each camper did have a nice shady tree to park under).  Water was available at several locations thoughout the park.  We arrived there at 11:15 AM and there were plenty of places available but the park was filled by late afternoon and stayed that way all weekend even though it was pretty rainy.  Flies were bad but the screen room kept us comfortable.  In summer, you have to expect some sort of pesky critter and as DH kept telling me, " Just deal with it darlin ."   OK, maybe he didn t say darlin .  The park rangers patrolled frequently and the gates were locked at 9:00 PM so safety was not an issue.  The staff were very friendly and helpful.

The trail to the top of Stone Mountain and then on to Stone Mountain Falls is really beautiful.  One guy referred to the trail as a granite stairstepper and the description really did fit.  After reaching the top we found out the hike was easier from the opposite end of the loop.  There are several other trails from the park we would like to take so we will definetely go back to this CG.

The camp host was a woman by the way and she had an Aliner.

slowpezThis is one of my very favorite state parks in NC.  I love to fly fish & they have an excellent catch & release program in the spring & fall.  I have yet to camp there, but I hope to go soon!  [:)]
