The Overmans

Here is the question, My wife and I camped a few weeks ago and we spent a boat load of money on ice for the ice chest over the 5 day period.  The temperature was in the mid uper 90 s every day with very little shade.  She wants to buy another small refrigerator for drinks and frozen stuff.  and take maybe only one cooler if any.  What do you think / do.  How many people have bought an extra refrigerator?

Turn Key

The OvermansShort trip (2-3 days) we use Coleman Extreme, ice and that s it.  Only use  fridge in PU on longer trips (4+ days).  On those trips, Extreme holds drinks and little else.  Works great for us.

We do the same as Turn Key. We have two 36qt extreem coolers which does the trick.[;)]

The OvermansThe hybrid has a larger fridge however my dh still wants a cooler-tron or electric cooler.  We ll probably get one next year.

The OvermansWe usually get by with 1 cooler & the fridge in the camper.  We have the Igloo extreme version & have been quite happy with it.  I keep mile & food items in the fridge, pop & other drinks in the cooler.  One thing I ve started doing is covering the cooler with a reflective blanket when it is direct sunlight.  That seems to help cut down on ice usage.  That, and not letting the kids go in the cooler every 5 minutes!

If you are always camping where there is electricity another fridge might work ok, but sometimes that doesn t work out  as planned.  A cooler needs no electric.

The OvermansWe put the Igloo we have in the shade under the bunk end the few times a year we camp without complete shade.  I also made an insulated cover to go over it.  The first one I made was an insulated blanket tied together at each end.  It worked well and fit nicely as well as taking about three minutes work.  Now I have one that I made from an insulated shade, sewn to fit.
Try to remember to put soft drinks in early in the morning when they are a little cooler then they are in the afternoon.  If you buy them cold that does not apply of course.
We start out with several milk cartons of frozen water.

The OvermansI believe I am going to purchase a compact freezer. It will work great when there are hookups which is primarily where we go. I can make my own ice for the cooler and it keep foods frozen. I usually do at least one 9 day trip per year and many times two such trips. Sometimes up to a 21 day trip. Ice gets pricey for that long of a duration.

I can build this model in or at least easily slip it under my tonneau cover

Why do I get the impression your going to come home with a 13 cubic foot fridge?

Run Tammy, Run....we all know what happens when you two shop!  LOL

The OvermansIf you do choose to go with the cooler, use block ice instead of cubes for it to last longer. You can make your own as Opie431 has stated. We use 2 liter bottles and then we have cold water later for drinking if need be.

We have the 50 qt. Coleman Extreme that we use for short trips and 150 qt. Igloo for longer trips. The 150 qt. is heavy, but we don t carry it around with us everywhere we go. It stays at camp and we ll bring a smaller cooler if we plan on going out for the day.

 The OvermansHi All,
For short trips we use our Coleman cooler, for long weekends (3 to 4 days) we use our 120 qt. Coleman and I put the ice in tall tupperware containers (ice seems to last longer and the meltoff doesn t get everywhere), for weeklong or longer trips we have a small fridge that we put inside the camper ontop of the stove (with a towel protecting the stove top) as we never cook inside the camper. I ll carry some food items in a cooler and then load them into the fridge after we set up and the fridge has cooled down. We then use the cooler as our drinks cooler adding ice as needed. I really like this system. The fridge on the stove top is at a really nice heighth and the AC helps it work more efficiently. Drinks cooler stays outside where it is readily available. All in all, a good system for us.

This limits you to only using it when you have hookups.  You said that s primarily where you go, but I d hate to be that limited.  You miss a lot of beautiful places by sticking to hookups only.  Also, how long will it take to get cool?  It may finally be cold once you get ready to break camp.

We ve been very happy with our Extreme cooler.  I posted in Product Reviews about our experience with it.

I have the Igloo Ultracold as well as my camper fridge which we use when there are no hookups. This would be mainly for the long trips such as the rally s.
