We recently returned from a repeat trip to Letchworth State Park in western New York. We stayed for 5 nights in loop 200 (only 200, 300 and 700 allow pets), on the same site we stayed in last year.

All camping sites have electric. Some loops have upgraded electric (30 or 50 amp). Water is available at various places within each loop. We had a water spigot across from our site and just made it with 75? of hose to refill our tank.

The bathhouses are old, but are cleaned daily. The showers were a bit overly warm, but water was plentiful. The campground was only crowded over the weekend. On the weekdays we were there, a good number of sites were empty, so bathhouse traffic was minimal. In the camping area you will find a recreation building, a camp store and a laundry, as well as softball fields and a volleyball court. There are usually scheduled activities that are posted at the rec building.

The views of the gorge are spectacular. We spent two days in the southern park area walking trails and viewing the gorge. Husband and son took a full day to mountain bike several trails. Even though the Finger Lakes Trail is currently closed to mountain bikers, due to very wet weather this year, they found several technical park trails to bike and had a great day on the trails.

Wild life abounds and tends to walk across roads at the heavily wooded areas. Speed must be kept at a minimum. At one point, we had a herd of deer numbering about 12 cross right in front of us.

The 14,000 + acre park has two swimming pools ($1.00 admission for kids, $2.00 for adults), 3 gift shops, a visitors center, a bed and breakfast, a museum and several cafes. There are numerous hiking trails ranging from easy to challenging. Several trails will bring you to the gorge edge, so caution is advised at all times.

This year, the park is renting electric cars with a maximum speed of 25mph to visitors. We did not choose to rent one, although they looked fun. The drawback is that the vehicles cannot cross between the two areas of the park, due to the speed limits. Camping loops are in the northern section and it?s an 11 mile drive to the southern section. To get good use of the vehicle, drive to the southern end and rent a car there and tour the falls and the gorge for a day. Rental was $15 for 4 hours or $20 for any 12 hour period, but the renter is responsible to plug the car in overnight or get charged for a tow.

Overall, we were once again very happy with our camping experience at Letchworth. The weather was gorgeous and the park never fails to amaze us.

kathybrjVery nice review Kathy.  I was at the park for a long weekend although we spent one day out of the park at Niagara Falls.

The park is beautiful and well kept.  I wish we would have had more time to spend in the park.  One thing that could be a problem is that the dump station only has one hole.  RVs were lined up to dump on Sunday when we left.  I ended up dumping my cassette potty in a regular bathroom toilet.

I am taking a poll to see if COTOC wants to take a group trip to the park next year.[:)]

kathybrjIn our loop, at the front of the bath house was a larger type of toilet in a small room on it s own. That was where we were dumping our grey water. Blaise had mentioned dumping the porta potty in there, but the problem is there is no hose to rinse with in there. Otherwise, that would have worked out well.

We usually arrive on the weekend and leave on a weekday, so the dumpstation isn t usually an issue, but, with all the campers there last weekend, I can see where the lines could get really long!

kathybrjOur bathroom had one of the sinks too.  I don t think they would have liked you dumping black water down it.  Any solids would clog it up.  It is OK to dump them in a regular toilet though.
