On the old board there was a thread for " Travelin Lite"   that never has been revived on here, but I need some help.  After struglling with weight control for several years I have offically lost the battle.  I went to the doctor the other day, for the first time in three years, for an unrelated minor matter and my blood pressure was 190/110.[:@]  Guess who in now on bloodpressure medication.
Anyhow besides trying to control fat intake and carb intake I now need to drastically reduce my salt intake.  I am going to try using the DASH diet which is supposed to help reduce BP.  Anyhow I am going crazy trying to read labels and juggle all these nutrients.  I have been looking at some diet software programs and was wondering if anyone has tried any of these,  of course being rather cheap, I am primarily looking for a shareware type program.

GarrettWhile I have not used any software, I have a friend that used e-diets ( http://www.ediets.com/ ) with some success.  I think their charge in minimal, but I could be wrong.

I ve had success on The Carbohydrate Addicts diet.  Check out the following site for more information: http://www.carbohydrateaddicts.com/

GarrettCampingboaters, I have used ediets.com and actually lost 50 pounds on their program in a years time.  But like anybosdy else it began to get old, and I began to cheat and gained 30 of it back.  Next I sarted on the Carbohydrate addicts diets last Septembe and lost 20 pound in about four months before I began not to be as disciplined and gaind 10 pounds back.  The good news is I am not gaining back more than I loose so I am heading in the right direction.  I have no proof, but I am concerned that the low carb thing maybe the cause of my current high BP.  I have never had anything close to this in the past.  Both those programs will work if a person can stick to them.  And at first the both seem pretty easy to stick with.  I just have no self control when it comes to food. That is why I am looking for software that will easily let me track what I am actually consuming.  I may well go back to ediets, but I think I still need to track my consumption too.

GarrettA different tack to the same end is a program called " The Lord s Table"  by the " Setting Captives Free"  Ministry.  It is an on-line program that helps you deal with the root cause of your over eating.  I am a voluteer mentor for one of their other programs.  I may be the answer you are looking for.  Here is the link: [link=]http://www.settingcaptivesfree.com/TLT_InfoPak.pdf[/link].  You will probably have to cut and paste it since I can never seem to get these links to work.

 Good Luck,

GarrettGarrett, one way to reduce your salt, don t add salt to water when cooking pasta, potatoes, etc.  Also, don t add in recipes, I know sometimes the recipe is not supposed to come out right without it, but I have not found one that will does not taste right.

I haven t salted anything in over 25yrs (except the sidewalk in winter and the small fire I had in my over 22yrs ago).  DH didn t see my start recipes for quite a while after we were married, and he never new the difference.  If you are used to salting everything, gradually cut back on the amount you use.

We also do not use canned vegetables, everthing is frozen.

Good luck and hope you pressure comes down.

GarrettAnother problem is it s not just NACL or salt it s any chemical with sodium in it that will affect you blood pressure.
I ve found in 7 years of sodium chasing just about any prepared food will contain way to much. A can of condensed soup can contain you enitre daily allowance for sodium.
A tip to remember is look at he portion size. That can of soup is two servings so you have to double the sodium if you eat the entire can.  A large bag of potato chips might say it s only got 300 millgrams of sodium, but that bag might have 10-12 servings in it. Of course the same thing go for fats and carbohydrates as well.

 GarrettHi Mike and Ruth,

About a year ago, I had a scare from my doctor. She walked in, looked at my chart, and very quietly told me the following. " Chuck, I m serious about what I m about to say, if you come here next time heavier than you are now, I will look at your chart, set it down, and walk out of the room. You will then no longer be a patient of mine!"

I asked her what I needed to do, other than loose 150 pounds and she recommended Weight Watchers. I ve now been on it since the first part of October and have lost 57 pounds. I still have another 90 to go. DW has lost 27 pounds.

We ve tried several other alternatives in the past, e-diets, Jenny Craig, but Weight Watchers is by far the most sensible. You can eat what you want with nothing off limits. You just have to stay within your daily point range.

 I hope this helps.

GarrettGarrett, I bumped the " Healthy Living " site up for you.  Maybe you can breathe some life into it, LOL.
