Our largest dog "Darth" has to go to the vet AGAIN for pancreaitis -- this is his 3rd time since Christmas. He hasn't been officially diagnosed with it yet, but he has the same symptoms as the last 2 times.

When and where will it all end?

I let everyone know when I hear more about his condition.

Does anyone know about dogs and pancreaitis? Possibly someone who works for a vet or is a vet...

UPATE! -- DH just left the vet and the good news is we got him there before it developed in pancreaitis.  We have known that he has a VERY sensitive stomach and he must have gotten into table food.

Several times he as gotten into aluminum cans and shredded with no problems and a box of straws that went straight thru (don't ask:o ) with no problems, but give him human food and we end up with a huge vet bill.

This dog comes to the table and sets his head DOWN on the table - that's how tall he is.  We now have to be even more carefull and make sure NOTHING is available for him.  I guess garbage goes straight outside - we can't have anything in the inside can even for the day as he may end up getting into it.

Wow Nancy,   Glad to hear he's ok now...even if it will be a pain to try to keep everything away from  him!  LOL    They're like our children aren't they!?!

We trained our pooch not to get in the trash can by VERY liberally covering the trash with cayenne pepper.   Twice trying was all it took!  He totally ignores the trash cans now!;)

When I got home DH also told me that he has to be fed a special diet for 2 weeks.  Been there before and it's difficult to feed 4 dogs at one time and 1 dog another time.  They are so used to having their food there to eat when they feel like it:rolleyes:  -- last time it took quite a while to get them to eat and then the 4 fought

Sure glad to hear you caught it in time so you didn't have to worry about a big vet bill!  Poor pooch!

Glad to hear it wasn't too terribly serious.

Being so big, do you feed your dog from a raised feeding dish?  I know that large breed dogs can be prone to gastric torsion... a potentially deadly problem where the stomach flips and gets twisted, cutting off blood supply.  Seeing that your dog is prone to tummy trouble it would be good to make sure he doesn't have to deal with this sort of problem too.

If he's so big he can put his head down on the table, I'd take that as an ok to go shopping!!!  For a tall bar style table with the tall stools!  So neat!  Saw some at a yard sale this weekend.  Wished I could justify buying them for myself!

We asked the vet if there is anything we can do to avoid any problems and he said no.

Although Darth does lay down when he eats.  It is so funny, he lays down and takes his paw and moves the bowl between his legs and he does the same with the water  (water everywhere).

I am glad to here your dog will be OK.  I hope you can keep him on his diet. :)

With the 4 other dogs, it is hard, especially since we have always just left the bowl on the floor and they eat when hungary, now 4 dogs battling for food is hard.  The special food they have for Darth, cannot be fed to the other 4 - we checked with the vet and was hoping that we could go that route even though it is a little more expensive and they said the other dogs shouldn't eat it:mad:

I have had a dog and 2 cats on special diets and it has always been a battle to make sure everyone eats the proper food.  We have that problem now with the cat and kitten, although it isn't as  critical as the prescription diets are.

Glad someone else has had the feeding experience, and we're glad that only 2 foods are involved.
