well it's kind hard to bring my two large turtles and three gecko's with us, but have thought about it with all the bug out there , but they would blend in to well with nature

I voted yes, but will qualify that. We almost always take our dog, Lil Spanky, with us when we are camping at our own place, with family and friends. She loves camping, and has a ball running thru the woods and playing keep away with every stick she can carry. But, we very seldom take her if we are going to be camping in a public campground, or traveling from one place to another. She doesn't enjoy being stuck in the car for long, doesn't like being left in the camper if we go out for any length of time and has no fun if we have to keep her on a chain in our campsite. She's too big to try to contain her in small spaces, has lots of energy and shouldn't be restrained or restricted for long. It just isn't fair to her, she has no fun, and when she isn't having fun, then neither are we, LOL. Also, with her size and energy, she can be intimidating to small children and other campers, and it isn't fair to them to make them wonder if she's safe. (which she is).

Gone-Camping

My initial response to this question might have been a little abrupt, but my sentiments remain firmly planted. However, it might be to the befit of everyone else on the board to understand that my dog is 1/2 Dalmation & 1/2 Pit Bull, so I have a very large, very untrainable dog, that loves to bite things (and people) and with those locking jaws he can chew through anything.....I know this for a fact, as he completely ate the covering and cusion material on my best recliner one day when left inside the house, I came home to find a wooden frame sitting there in the living room, with white fluffy stuff (not Birol's type of fluff) all over the place! So I reiterate, this dog is not stepping foot inside my new trailer!!! ;)

I hear ya Gone-Camping.  I would have loved to take my old Taffi camping but she was just too old at 18 this year and would not have bothered anything or anyone.  My fear was that another dog would be running loose in the campground and bother her.  She was more comfortable at home with familiar things and with the person who lovingly cared for her when I had to be away.  Taffi passed on to the other side in August this year and I really miss her.

Oh my gosh....that is too funny...well, it's one of those things that are "funny" to someone else!  LOL.....  Friends of ours had a huge Pit Bull (over 100 pounds!)  He came home from work one evening to fine the soles of his Army boots....no leather, no strings, no metal eyelets.....only the soles!

Our elderly dogs have trouble with the heat  and even with a ramp need  help getting in and out of the PU> When they were younger they were very good campers and hikers.  We trained them to stay on the trail and never let them off leash untill they were very well trained to come when called. (no matter what !)  Our younger one has way to much energy and would want us to play with him any time we sat still for a second!!  So We leave them with a pet sitter and we relax!!  I do miss them the whole time but I am not worried about them.  The cats LOVE sitting in the window of the PU watching everything but they only went with us once  when we were between houses....

We occassionaly take our mini dacshund. A couple of weekends ago, we took her on an Indian Princess camp out. Our freinds brought their two Australian Shepards, and a couple of the campers brought their Labs, for a total of 5 dogs.

All the dogs are pretty good off the leash, except ours, so ours stays on a leash at ALL times. The other dogs don't run off to other camps (with few exceptions). I guess durring one of those exceptions, someone didn't like it, so they reported us to the ranger.

The ranger pulled up on his electric car, and asked us about our dogs. All the dogs sort of stood up at once. The ranger then asked if we had seen any dogs running loose. On queue, all 5 dogs started barking in unison, for about two minutes straight, as if they were protesting being accused of running loose. When the ranger was able to get a word in edgewise, he reminded us of the leash rule, and departed. The dogs then sat down, and went back to relaxing. We must have laughed for about an hour.

My 2 labs come with us most of the time.  We kennel them when we go for week-long trips for vacation.  That way we are free to go & do what we want, when we want.  For regular weekends I think they would gladly sit in the van the entire time I am packing just to make sure we don't forget them!  :p

Our dog likes camping when we can let him run around a little. The Cove CG in Gore Va has 3500 acres and 100 sites so there's lots of room for him to roam.

You Bet!  Our hounds (cockers) were part the family, their entire lives.  Recently they had to be put down by the vet.  It has been a sad time for us since then, but those hounds seen more of the USA than many people ever get to.  They were 13 and 11 years of age.  They have camped on both the Pop up and the Airstream Motorcoach. They were great at camping, and yes, we picked up after them when we went for walkies.

We had two Golden Retrievers, but we never took them with us while camping. They were too big and too roudy. We have given them to another owner who can take better care of them.
Christmas we got a Dachshund puppy (Rusty). He is much smaller and easily controled. We are planning to take him camping with us some this season.

In Memoriam:

We always took our Papillon, Whiskee with us.  He was my constant shadow for 12 years, hiking, running (later years he rode in the bottom of the stroller)and camping.  Sadly I put him down Sunday and am very sorely missing the little guy.  We had great times & I have great memories to treasure.  My favorite is after a 6 miles hike I had an older guy come up and tell me off a bit that my 7 lb little dog was too small to be on trails such as this.  As he was saying this Whiskee was bouncing up and down like a maniac at my side wanting more!
