Regarding the Apo-Atenol and Alcohol ......

When my wife asked on my behalf (She was there for herself) my doctor said I can have a glass of beer (We have some friends coming over).

I am just curious why there is a restriction. I know medicine and acholol do not mix, and I will listen to my doctor. But I want to know what kind of reaction alcohol causes in my case. I know too much acholol increases blood pressure. As this pill is reducing my heart rate, and alcohol in general is a relaxer, would it reduce my heart rate more ? Or cause it to increase ? or plain good old instant coma ? (just kidding with this one). So can you let me know please ? I think I explained my question pretty well.

Thanks for your time ....

P.S. No I am not going to try to adjust my alcohol intake based on what you said and risk my health. I will have my glass and be done with it. So don't think I have an ulterior motive by asking this.

P.S.S. yeah I thought about using a 1 liter glass for the beer :)

Although I prefer my pts to not drink at all, one drink will likely not hurt.

Before a bunch of people start citing study after study that says one drink a day is good for the heart, there are plenty of people who don't drink at all, and who live just as long or longer. I am skeptical about those studies.

Thanks for the answer, do you not want to get into the technical side of why it is not good ? exactly what it causes to go bad ? Please ?

With a background strong in chemistry and biology, I would say that the reason you shouldn't drink when on prescription drugs has to do with the effect it will have on the chemical composition of the medication.  That is why there is a limit.  Usually there is a sheet that the pharmacy gives you with the medication which describes the potential effects that alcohol might have, such as drowsiness or a heightened effect of nervousness or something else.  In order for the meds to work properly there has to be a limit.

So, it sort of makes the drugs ineffective, or make it supereffective or something.   That is excetly what I wanted to know in my particular case. And the how of it :) Yup, I was born curious, call me Mr. Curious :)

...as we say around in these parts, "all things in moderation."  Take care of yourself and do a lot of studying about your condition. Do what is best for you.

Reading all the time ...... I am a curious guy as I stated before .... And I have no desire to drink to death. Just that when I had half a glass of beer, our guests did not drink what they normally deink. They felt awkard I guess, even though we explained the situation. Oh well, maybe for the better, the "he" guest still managed to knock over his red wine glas  :D  :D  :D  :D

Next time, tell the guest that they have to make up for your unused share.  Or, As granpa used to say when some guests didn't come....that just leaves more for us.
