Well, my worries about the gifts that didn't arrive really weren't that important, after all.   I went out shopping Tuesday morning and picked up a few things.  Was back home by about 1:00 p.m. but was feeling kinda scratchy and strange.   By 6:00 I could hardly move, and have been really sick ever since then.   We usually get together here at our house with our kids and grandkids on Christmas eve, but I had to call all and tell them we need to postpone.   I have been doing a lot of sleeping, but chest is tight and temp is about 103, coughing is driving me nuts.   I do feel a bit better right now, (1:58 a.m. up to take more AlkaSeltzer Flu medicine, drink some water and use the bathroom yet again)) and am hoping that another several hours more sleep will get me over the hump with this.   The girls have said that they will come over early to help with things if I feel up to doing it tonight.

Toni,

Sorry you have got the funk. But see the thread about the flu and using/alternating Tylenol and Ibuprofen. That combination works.

"That combination in alternation will help your situation and more in the nation, so you can use your playstation, or else I'll give you a lashin'!"

Hope you feel like laughing at that!

Thanks for the advice, you can be sure that I'll try it.   I did get a little more sleep since I last posted, and it might have helped, it's kind of hard to say.   I don't feel quite as shaky now as I did yesterday.  But the muscles in my chest and stomach hurt so bad from the coughing that it's hard to even take a deep breath.   I'm pumping the liquids in, tho, I can really tell that makes a difference, and I'm going to slowly get done only the most important things today.   Everything else will just have to wait.   And, after all, it's my own kids that are coming over, they grew up here and have seen this place at it's worst.   I don't have to impress anyone, LOL.

Hey sis, sorry to hear you've caught the bug.

Peggy & I both had that virus (or flu). Although the fever and upset stomach left after 2 days, the coughing & congestion lingered for a few weeks. I thought I'd never get over it.

We're leaving for Jenny Jump in a few hours & won't be back til Sunday. Cold, clean mountain air will purge any of the remaining germs from us. Stay safe & warm, drink your chicken soup and have a Merry Xmas!

I'm so sorry you've been layed low by the flu! Lots of rest and fluids!  I remember having pneumonia a few years ago which wiped out Christmas and New Year's...not fun.  Please fee better soon!

gr8grandpa

I hope that you get over the flu soon. We have our Christmas get together the Sunday before Cristmas every year . We had to postpone ours because my wife got the flu. I had her take advil and tylenol when she first started. I have been taking it too. So far I have not caught it. We hope to get together this Sunday.

Ack, Toni!  I'm sorry!  :(  Please feel better soon and then have a wonderful after-Christmas Christmas!

Well, my darling DH made me promise yesterday that if I got thru the get together with the kids, and didn't get any better, I would let him take me to the ER.   The get-together went really well, thanks to him, he did everything.  (Oh yeah, the kids helped too)   But, I got worse instead of better, and so early this am we headed for the Dr's office.   I had called there first, and was told they could get me in much faster than the ER.   After a very short wait, some chest x-rays, testing for blood oxygen and a breathing treatment, he pronounced me as having pneumonia.   I'm on some heavy duty antibiotics, and Robitussin, along with the Tylenol and ibuprofin.   I'm so lucky to have a DH who can be heavy handed with his demands when it's called for, as I would have just suffered a little longer waiting for this to go away.
Thanks for all your good wishes and thoughts.   And, if anyone else starts to come down with something that seems like it may be more than just your common garden variety cold, take it from me, DO NOT WAIT to see if it will go away.   Call your DR. and get checked, it can make a very big difference in what might happen to you.
And, lil bro, thanks for the chicken soup.  Sorry that i had to hang up on you last night, but I couldn't breath or talk.   Hope that your stay at the Jenny Jump was lots of fun.   will talk to you later.

Keep up those fluids to keep that chest congestion loose and easy to get rid of...gross I know, but I've worked with a doctor for 7 years now so it's doesn't bug me, cough it out and get rid of it!!! Sleep elevated with at least two pillows so your chest doesn't feel constricted and a humidifier (cool air) in your bedroom at night will help too.   Rest up and give yourself time to get well, you're going to feel tired for awhile even after it's over.   Let the antibiotics do their thing but after your done with the course, make sure you're feeling up to snuff otherwise go right back to the doctor and see if you need a second go around on them or change them.   Do you have any camping brochures you can go enjoy looking over while you rest!  Think of all the camping trips you can be mapping out as you dream of warmer days and shaking that pneumonia!  Be well!

So sorry that your holidays are being spent "under the weather" but it sounds like you are on the right track to getting better.  At least the pneumonia was not bad enough to put you into the hospital.  Take good care of yourself and don't try to do too much too soon.  This is Dr. B-flat speaking who really knows from been there, done that.;)   Yes, think of camping times and sunny days ahead.  Take this time to let others wait on you.  Place the bell beside your chair to ring when you need something.  Just kidding.  Heck, I always wanted to be "Queen for A Day.":D

Toni,
Glad you saw the DR. and are on the road to recovery. My 2 girls and myself came down with this flu on Tues. Dec 23 and also had to postpone a trip to NY to be with family because of it. I am prone to Pneumonia because I have had it before so I will keep a close watch. My youngest has asthma which is being set off by the respiratory part. Both of the kids had high fevers and are done with that part. I sure wish I had stock in Kleenex!! We spent Christmas Eve at the doctors and have been in PJs now for 4 days. My DH even went to church by himself. So what were those flu shots for????

Toni, hope you're feeling better -- I just want everyone to err on caution.  We have had 2 infant (under 2) related deaths in the part few weeks.  The last was just this past week -- parents were trying to treat themselves for a few days and by the time they took the child to ER, she died about 12hrs laters.  The one before that, child started getting sick and was taken to ER and died the next day.

PLEASE DON'T MESS AROUND AND JUST TAKE TO DR IMMEDIATELY!

Okay, bad choice of words. In fact, this is more than a little indelicate, maybe even inappropriate. But, this saga of sickness has a nasty little sequel. I just have to tell it. I'm sorry.
My Dr. has prescribed an antibiotic for me called Augmentin. I started taking it on friday afternoon. As is often the case when you have an infection that is pretty strong, it has taken the stuff a few days to actually make a difference that I could feel. Today I also started to feel something else. So, I went online to look up Augmentin, and see what I could find beyond what the pharmacy insert had to say. Interesting, that at a time when a person is coughing terribly, with enough force that you almost think that you could push out something roughly the size and shape of Rhode Island (okay, I know, I said I'm sorry) that the first thing they think of to give you for your problem is a medication that has a side effect of diarrhea. Along with that, take lots of Robitussin for the congestion. (Lots of menthol, very 'burny'!) This is not funny . Or, not as funny as it would be if someone else were telling it.

Oops, almost forgot to mention that my Dr has reminded me that I will almost certainly need to get another prescription when I am done with this one to take care of that 'other' problem that antibiotics sometimes cause.   (Yes, ladies, that's the one)

to keep that "other" problem away when using antibiotics drink lots of water which may be hard of course if you are nauseous but if not, drink up and keep things flowing!!!  If you are experiencing a lot of the "d" word from the antibiotic, remember to replace the electrolytes in your body by drinking Gatorade or other sports type drinks!!  Feel better!
