ok twice in the last day I have seen people cooking on a shovel??? Over coals... both of them were on tv. One was frying eggs, the other a burger.... Any one ever try this???????

An old camping trick, but the fire does usually ruin the shovel after a couple of meals. Big old flat coal shovels as well as flat end garden spades work well.

I'd never eat off someone else's shovel, you never know it they used it on a walk with the dog.

Sounds interisting...
I have had Burgers off of an huge saw blade from an old saw mill. It was every bit of 2 feet in dia. bent slightly to drain the grease. It was proped up on cinder blocks with a fire under it. Lunch was served from it on a canoe trip from the down river canoe company in Luray Va.

Saw that on Lisa & Dweezil on the Food Network the other day. It did look like a NEW shovel!! Suppose you could cover it with foil!

My grandfather used to have a musical saw, it was really neat, but he never cooked on it.   Now that I think about it, during the 60's we had a few parties where the guys cooked something on a shovel and ....oh, never mind.

I'd never eat off my own shovels because I do know!

Actually Boston I have to agree with you. It was my FIL that had one "just for cookin' "

He also had a 36 inch diameter frying pan he bought from some backwoods store way up in Canada.
The man like to put on a show when we were camping and he cooked.
He also had a round tined manure fork he used for hot dogs. About 2 dozen at a time. Also "just for cookin' "

never did the shovel, but one time I had the bacon, eggs and everything but no pan or anything to cook them on.  So I cut the ends off and unrolled a few beer cans...how do you like your eggs? Please don't say scrambled :D

I grew up in south Florida during the Great Depresson and can remember seeing men working on WPA projects cooking on shovels over an open fire. They also cooked biscuits on large hoes which were called hoe cakes......

Is it anything like "eating on a dime?" ;) :J

I thought Brian was the only crazy person that cooked on garden implements.  We had a large bonfire once for a family get together, and well really we had cleared about a half acre of land of all the deadfall etc, and were burning it off.  Everyone decided to roast weiners, but the darned fire was so large and hot that you roasted yourself as much as you did the hot dogs with a standard method.  Brian took the garden rake and washed it, then stuck it in the coals till it was so hot it wasn't likely anything survived, and then proceeded to cook hot dogs on the tines.  Everyone made fun of him, but everyone ate the hot dogs too, and he could cook quite a few at a time as well.  I would venture to say most of these episodes started as a necessity, and then someone took them up as a novelty and expanded on it.
