I think in those late 70's units, the thermostat is a control inside the heater front cover! At least that is where the thermostat on my old 78 Starcraft was located!

My 1978 Palomino has a HydraFlame furnace, and this has two control knobs located at the bottom of the furnace.  Need to remove the lower portion of the grill cover. The first control is a red knob for the gas control. (off / pilot light / On) The second control is a white knob with numbers 1-8. This is the thermostat.

If your model's combustion chamber looks like a giant coffee can, at the bottom of this can is a little sliding access door that must be moved to the open position. This is where the pilot light is located.

To light the pilot, you turn the red knob to the pilot light position, and press in the knob. This allows the gas to go to the pilot light. Light the pilot and hold in the knob for approx. 30 seconds until the thermalcouple allows the pilot light to remain lit. turn the gas control knob to the on position.
Now turn the white thermostat knob from the number 1 position up until the furnace burner ignites.  Close the pilot access door.

Your model probably works in a simular fashion.

Not know anything about this problem, I can relate to the owner's manual.  Our 1985 Starcraft manual really s^cked.  It do have to admit that our new manual is better, but still is a little lacking, you definitely have to think...I leave that up to DH....
