Last week, I carried my GPS onboard my flights to CA from Nashville, TN with me, with no problems getting it past security.

I was able to "lock on" satellites before takeoff (with strategic hiding from the attendants). It was really cool being able to watch the MPH go up up up as we took off! On one flight, we got up over 600 MPH during the flight!

Another really neat benefit was being able to tell exactly where we were and what we were flying over (i.e., "What is that down there?" "I don't know, but it is in Wichita!").

So, if you are floundering about buying one, and will soon take a jet flight, BUY ONE! It is fun to watch!

   Why did you have to hide it?  Isn't there a reason they don't want you to using electronics when taking off and landing?

I can't understand what the reason could be. I find it hard to believe it could interfere with the plane's electronics. If that were the case the terrorists would just have to bring a cell phones, which are legal, and turn them on during takeoff.

All electronic devices have some electronic interference radiate from them when turned on. SOme have more, some has less. When I was getting flying lessons we were taught how/why etc, but forgot about it. Some planes are also more prone to being mislead by the interference radiated by electronic stuff.

I believe mostly what it does is mess with the navigational instruments, which can have serious consequences .... maybe someone who knows more can pitch in.

I WOULD LOVE TO be able to watch the GPS on a flight though, it is too tempting :)

I agree with Brainpause..... It is WAY COOL to watch your GPSr while in flight.

Before traveling I had many of the same questions regarding use on commercial aircraft.  My concerns stemmed more towards the security issues rather than electro-mechanical.  Imagine an unsuspecting crewmember or passenger seeing a stranger with this type of device.  Shades of 9-11.

I learned a lot from the questions I asked.

Is it Safe to use a handheld GPS Receiver on a Commercial Aircraft?

I discovered that each airline has it's on policy concerning GPS use in flight.

Airline Policies

In simple terms.  Many airlines do allow the use at the Pilots discretion.  You just need to ask one of the Flight Crew upon boarding.  For the most part I found them very receptive.

If you are going to use the GPSr and have permission don't forget to explain to the person next to you what you are doing.  This way they won't think you have BAD intentions and may be interested.

Make sure you get a window seat.  Inboard seats tend to not allow for a signal lock.

Happy Traveling

I have a USB GPS receiver for my laptop. It is from Delorme and works with their mapping software. I'll have to remember to bring my laptop along next time to try it out. Works great for traveling too!!

Hmmmm. set way point for landing airport, calculate route.. You could know just how long it will take to get there! Just set it for "off road" calculations .. COOL!
