It is DH's b-day at the end of this month, and while he has already gone out and bought himself a big present (huge Fender amp--the monster takes up the whole bedroom! :eyecrazy: )  I'd still like to get him a little something to unwrap on his birthday.  I was thinking of a not-too-expensive GPS unit.  Does anyone have some recommendations for a good one?

TIA! :)

Hi Lori,

What is Dave going to be using the GPS for. Will it be for geocaching? There are a couple of cool units from Garmin (60c & 60cs) and they are NOT inexpensive but they do work well for geocaching. Garmin does make much more inexpensive units that will ultimately work well.

I own a Magellan Meridian Platinum (still well over $300) that I use for geocaching and I love the unit. Magellan has a nice 'package' that Costco carries. It's a good deal because you get mapping software with it.

Here's a link to Geocaching.com's forums on GPS units: http://forums.groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showforum=11
There's a lot of searchable info there.

I'll have my GPS with us & I'd be happy to take you caching with us at Malibu in a couple of weeks. Looking forward to seeing you - It's been a while!

Thanks for the info Rich.  I think that he would use it for geocaching and whatever else fun things you can do with electronic gadgets like this.  I would love to see your MAgellan at malibu.  We're really looking forward to seeing you, Tamara and the kids too.  Their images are frozen in time in my memory, and yet I bet they've all been growing like weeds!  It has been WAAAAY too long!! :)

I have a Garmin etrex legend.  It geocaches very well and it ran about $175 or so.  There is just an etrex that runs between $100 and $130 online.  For some great info, check www.geocaching.com

You know once Dave plays with it - he'll want one. I'll bring a map of the closest caches to the campsite & we'll go caching.

Griff's been growing just as fast but you're always with him so you don't see it as much. We're looking forward to camping with you & you family too. Break out the Marga-g-ta's!!!

Same here. Love mine, and even the wifey has gotten in to geocaching!

Has anyone installed the updated map's for the
 Garmin etrex legend yet?
(is it worth the money)!!

I have NOT installed the maps. Not sure I want to. When I was in CA, the screen was so jumbled up that it was hard to read. I like mine the way it is. The detailed maps might be better on a color unit.

That said, I have not used the detailed maps in areas I am familiar/not familiar with. So, they MIGHT be useful/worth the money, but I can't say.

I too am interested in (2) particular units and maybe those more experienced than myself can give me some advice.  I'd like to get into GeoCamping & also the use of the GPS for traveling.  There are 2 units that Costco sells that I'm thinking about.

Magellan Sport Trak Pro for $200 (-$50 rebate at store) http://www.costco.com/frameset.asp?trg=subcat%2Easp&catid=79&subid=4842&hierid=4843&log=&NavTop=

Magellan Meridian Gold Travelers Pack $369 (discounted at local store)

Thanks for any advice.

I would go with the Meridian I have owned both and the Mederian has more features and bigger screen.

I have a Meridian Platinum and love it.
