We just came back from our 1 week camping trip to Savannah GA where we stayed at Skidaway Island State Park and then the latter half of the week we stayed in Charleston SC at James Island County Park.  Both areas are so full of history and entertainment.  This area can be very hot.  When we go camping we always take our dog with us.  She is getting older and at times she can not keep up with us when we walk or she gets to hot.  This time we left her in the camper a few times with the air conditioning on high.  The first day we came back it was cool in the camper but I would have felt a little better if it was cooler.  I then remembered the mylar emergency blankets we had.  We put one on each bunk end by attaching them with clothes pins, even though it did not cover the bunk end entirely, when we came back it was at least 10 degrees cooler in the camper than the day before.  These do work and are cheap. How do I know that for a fact?  When we took the blankets off the bunk ends with in minutes the air conditioner was having a bit of a problem keeping up with the heat coming through the bunk ends.  I was amazed!

I have always been VERY nervous (still very much so) about leaving my dog in the camper, but if we do leave her in the camper we make it a short and quick trip.  I have heard many horror stories about the power going out at campgrounds.

Those work great in a pinch, but for long-lasting complete coverage (do I sound like a commercial?  :D), try //www.popupgizmos.com .  ;)

Oh, and if your dog is small, you can try a mesh backpack.  My Chihuahua goes almost everywhere in ours (hers), and the children we pass always get a big kick out of it.  Definately a matter of size with the dog, though - no way is the Collie going anywhere on my back!

I agree with Miss-Teri, the emergency blankets are for only in a pinch.  We tried them the really they only lasted 1 trip.  The silver started coming off.

We went to popupgizmos and got theirs and have been very happy with them.  They do make a difference.

On the old board someone tested them and if I remember correctly the difference in the bunk end from with or without, was 10-20 degrees.  I know someone will correct me if I'm wrong, and maybe someone has the site bookmarked with the test showing and explaining how it was tested.

Also, others have used them in the reverse for cold weather to keep the warmth inside the camper.

We never camp, winter or summer, without our popupgizmos.  They are custom made to fit your particular PU and are well worth the cost.  If you order them and mention that you are a PUT member, you will get 10% off of the price.  :#

Here is another vote for PUG solar blankets.  I used the light weight ones and they were OK, but the silver started coming off of them.  Some people have made their own blankets out of space blankets (around $12 each).  Either way it really helps keep the heat out of the PU. :)
