We are going to Cove Campground in Va over Labor Day and would appreciate any first hand info from those who have camped there. Also we are considering camping in the Myrtle Beach area in Oct and Barefoot looks lowkey and nice. Anyone camped there? Thanks,

I've never heard of Cove Campground, sure you don't mean Toms Cove Campground perhaps??

A quick google search turned up this...

Yes Cliff, thats the one. Im just trying to get any first hand knowledge from my peeps here on PUT. Also we would probably stay at Ocean Waves in NC on our trip in Oct. except we want to check out the very south eastern part of NC, around Southport and Calabash for possible retirement in 10 years or so. Ocean Waves will be another trip.

Hi Sandy,

We normally stay at Myrtle Beach State Park when we camp at Myrtle. We like the larger, wooded sites.

As for Tom's Cove, we stayed there in 2001 during the pony swim (right before we met up with everyone at Douthat). It was pretty crowded during the pony swim. The sites were pretty close and the washrooms could have been cleaned up more often. BUT, remember we were there for the Pony Swim and I can't imagine that it would be as packed as then. Let's see Labor Day.....well maybe. LOL I don't believe that they allowed campfires unless they were in a grill. There is a small area to walk Lillybelle right behind the large game room building, IIRC. (wasn't too bad) There were quite a few people that caught crabs by the pier. By the way, if you go past the entrance to Tom's Cove there is a carryout seafood place on the right hand side about 4 blocks down that you can get some nice fried fish, shellfish and hush puppies. If Janett can find the name of the place she will e-mail it to you.

Found it. It is called Melvyn's Seafood Market.

Used 2B PopUPTimes

The Off Road article that we did last year (V6#3) was at the Cove and everybody that came with us loved it. We've been going there for 25 years and it hasn't changed much. No store, no game room, no mini golf, just 3200 beautiful acres in the mountains, only 100 campsites, shooting range, offroad trails, hiking trails, big fishing ponds (~50 acres)w/big fish, nice beach on the lake.  Good people watching when the local are there. The fees are per person per 24 hours. If you checkin at 4pm you can leave a 4pm

Camp 1 has electric only but is too close to everything.
Camp 2 is the best ask for lake side sites 32 - 37
Camp 4 is very good secluded
Camp 5 and above is where the crazies go

Look for the fresh water spring that's on the main road just past the entrance to camp 2 - Great drinking water.

Lots of wildlife including a shy bear or 2.

Have fun!

OK, I read the posts once again. Oops  :eyecrazy:

Thanks Dave for the good info. We actually are in sites 33 and 34 so I am psyched now.
Janett and Mark, We were thinking about Myrtle Bch State Park or Huntington Beach SP but wanted to stay on the north side and closer to NC. We may have to rethink this. What are you guys doing Oct 9-17? The girls have 3 half days Oct 11-13(which in my opinion are useless) and then OCT 14, 15 off. Think about joining us cause we would love to see you if you could make it. I see that you have sold your popup, have you bought a hybrid yet? Are you at all familiar with Calabash-Southport area? Hope everyone is well. The girls say Hi to Jessica,

We live just outside Wilmington and, like Homecrew, we usually go to MB Travel Park when we're down that way. It's on the northern side of MB so there's less traffic to deal with to get there. They have a variety of sites.... the ocean side sites are open with few tree's (if any) and have covered picnic areas. Farther back, around the lake, the sites are larger and shaded.

Calabash is a nice area. Right now, there is some political "stuff" going on that doesn't seem too healthy. Carolina Shores "split off" from Calabash and incorperated into their own city. Seems like a lot of duplicity and wasted tax $$$ to me. I don't know the reasons behind the division. Southport is nice too. One of my favorite cities along the coastal area (New Bern is #1 to us). The growth and population explosion there is amazing and yet, so far, they've managed to retain the small town atmosphere.

Feel free to email if I can help with anymore info.

Thanks Dave for posting this info! We had been wondering how the Cove is too. I'd seen the website and they're only about an hour and forty minutes away from us, but had not found anyone who had been there.  I think we may have to try it out sometime!

Sandy, which cove are you thinking about?
I noticed that the folks here are talking about two different Campgrounds. I have been to the one in Gore and this is also the one Dave is refuring to.

Cove in Gore Va. outside of Winchester....

This is the other one. It is where the horses are and on the Bay.

This one is in Chincoteague along the Chesapeake Bay....

ooo..I took it that Sandy was talking about "THE COVE" near Winchester....not Tom's Cove....THE COVE is the one I want to know about!  ;> But I also thought The Cove in Winchester WAS the same one that Dave is referrring to?? Sure sounds like it from the descriptions he gave....

YES! The one in Gore is the one Dave is talking about. It is one of his Favorite Campgrounds. I think it is the one Sandy wanted to know about too? Someone else brought up "Toms Cove" it is totally different from "The Cove"......Hope this confuse's everyone even more!   LOL!

The Cove in Gore Va. is the one and if it is the favorite of the head honcho here then thats good enough for me. The pressure is on you Dave. Oh OK here is a disclaimer for you. I, Sandy Smith (aka Lablover), will not personally hold you, Dave Newhouse, responsible for reccomending the Cove Campground in Gore Va. should we have a lousy time and not like it. After all we all know the unofficial camping creed is, "Everyone is responsible for their own fun".  The less there is for us to do the better, as far as I am concerned. Swimming and fishing sounds great to us. We were very surprised to get a lakeside side site for Labor Day wkend just last week. We are opting for no hookups and lakeside rather than electric and in a field. Some things are worth sacrificing. I just pray that the weather remains on the cool side. Thanks Rick for your input and concern. If anyone else is interested, they may still have some sites available. My next concern is an ocean front site in Myrtle Beach area for Oct. Barefoot is out and MBTP will take our $ but cant guarantee oceanft. Ive read some about Pirateland, any further coments? Thanks everyone, Sandy

Sandy, You "WILL" have a good time at the cove. It is a nice place. I might even have to try and join you on Labor day weekend. As far as the beach....when we went to Myrtle we stayed here and liked it just fine.

Myrtle Beach Travel Park!

ooo..yea! I'm so glad to hear this one is so nice...especially since it's pretty close to us.  Sandy..take pictures!!!  :>
