We did a five-night stay at Four Mile Creek State Park recently.

The park is located in Youngstown, New York. It was about a 15 minute ride to Niagara Falls, New York.

The sites are, for the most part, grassy. The only sites with paved driveways are the handicap sites. Our site was HUGE- we could have easily fit another 4 campers on it.

There are premium sites that are on Lake Ontario (no swimming from this park in the lake). The views are magnificent. Our site was not a premium site, but we did have a nice, but small view of the lake.

There are electric sites in a few loops. Very nicely maintained park- the bathhouse in our loop (200) was always very clean. Our only problem was that water was a good distance away, even though we were a very short walk to the bathhouse (they have locked any spigots off the bathhouse to keep people from tapping in for water for campers). There is a laundry at each bathhouse-coin operated washer and dryer.

They keep the grass cut nicely on the sites, although you have to watch for the maintainence guys- they FLY on those large mowers. There is no pool at the park and they have removed all the swings at the playgrounds. There isn't much to do, but several families brough vollyballs and badmiton sets and used the net provided by the park. We had enough room on our sit for bocci ball and horseshoes.

While we were there, they had a naturalist come in and bring some raptors and birds of prey in for an hour and a half session. My kids really liked it and they even allowed dogs near the pavilion- the birds actually like them, as they have dogs at the rescue center that the birds live in.

While in the area we toured the Niagara Power Vista, the Erie Canal at Lockport and Gasport (biked the tow path for about 15 miles), The American and Canadian side of the falls and some Niagara wineries. We also went to Old Fort Niagara, located in Fort Niagara State Park (also free admission). There is a pool at that state park (several, actually) and the kids could have swam there for a small fee.

We walked to Canada one day, over the Rainbow Bridge. I had the kid's birth certificates (copies) and a rabies certificate for the dog. There were no problems with border crossings at any time. It looked like a very long wait by car.

Since we were staying at a state park in the area, we had free parking down by the American side of the falls (usually $10) and the parking lot has a short sidewalk that leads you directly to the border crossing over the Rainbow Bridge.

Overall it was a very nice trip. The weather held out for us and there were lots of things to do.

I hope to have pictures of our site on my homepage soon.

Shhhhhhhhhh!!!!!

You guys are giving away our find of the season!!!!

We can't wait to go back there it was awesome... grass, grass, everywhere! No dirt to kick around!! Two best parts...

1) It was only $14 per night (I think, something like that...)

2) How cool was it to wake up, look out your window across lake ontario and see the Toronto skyline (my favorite city in North America...)

Oh yeah, the only thing we didn't like was the store. They didn't have crap and they were very rude. We bought wood there for our last night's fire and within 5 minutes of buying it, it started raining. I went back and asked if I could return it as we were leaving first thing in the AM and the guy wouldn't let me. He said the state doesn't allow returns (the store supposedly isn't run by the park system ...?), I complained at the park office and they said there was nothing they could do, and that they have had alot of complaints about the store and the staff... It wasn't the four bucks, it was the principle of it! Anyway...

We loved it other than that! So, Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh don't give away our secret...!

Kathybrj - on a different note, you were kind enough to offer some suggestions for Saratoga area. We couldn't get into any of the places you suggested, but we did get into Adirondack Adventure Resorts, it is about ten minutes from the race track (it was NOT one of your suggestions)... There was a reason they had openings... The place was a dump!!! We only used it to sleep so it didn't really matter to us, but for anyone else ever thinking of going there... Don't!

We may have to take you up on your offer to camp in your driveway next time... Just kidding!!

Thanks!
Joe
