With two small grandkids who drive me nuts about camping, I have decieded that one way to help fill the requirerment is to camp in the driveway.... Has anyone done such a thing ? I was even thinking about hitching up and towing the trailer  into the back yard. The kids like to camp but mother is not into it. So everytime I get ready to go they are screeming at me to take them. I don't mind taking them but they are a lot of work and I look at this time away from home at a getAway from it all. They are 3 and 4 years old. I ask this question because I am considering doing this next weekend. Any thoughts on this? Will go over?

I think it's a GREAT idea.  It's less work than hauling the camper somewhere and you don't really have to pack up a bunch of stuff.  You can walk into your house for anything you might need.  The kids (at that age) don't know the difference of "real" camping and just camping in the back yard.   Have fun!

It's a great idea!  We did it all the time with our kids when we had the popup.  They loved sleeping out there at night.  We'd cook something on the grill and bought one of those metal firepits and had a fire..just like being away.  We put our popup in the backyard but my neighbor and her kids camp out in the driveway alot when they can't get away.   Kids just love it!

We agree! They'll have a ball and it will be much easier for grandpa. :D

When we first bought our pop-up, we camped in the driveway. Another time, we also did this when we got a puppy. We wanted to see if he (Smokey) was cool with the floorplan. He loved it then, and he loves to go camping anytime...

We have camped in our driveway almost as many times as we have in a campground.  My kids (6 and 2) love it!  It is not much work at all and it also lets me keep the camper stocked/repaired as I can do these things before I close it down.

We often rent a movie and watch it until we fall asleep.  Next morning I can cook pancakes for Sunday breakfast before church.

When we go visit our granddaughter, we camp in their driveway. Our granddaughter thinks our popup is her play house and has a great time there. She tries to help set it up and I have a great time reaching my hand in under the bunkend and tickling her. Great fun and no motel needed. Plus we get water and electric hookup for no charge other than taking them out to dinner.

BYC-Back Yard Camping.

It is done in many areas by many people.  One of the most cost effective ways to camp. :D

We do it with our DGD (7) all the time.  She loves it, and it gives me a chance to spend some time alone with her, doing whatever she wants to do, whether it's coloring, or dressup or reading, or just laying on the bunk and talking.  And it makes a weekend of babysitting a whole new experience.

Looks like it is a plan! Not only that I can work on it much easier and maybe even winterize it. We can go camping even if the weather is bad.

DO IT!!  It's a wonderful idea and they will always remember it--it will be a treasured memory  for them  later on as it is with our now-grown kids.  And it is a great way to "get them hooked" on camping forever:)  What a wonderful grandparent you are!!! :# :# :#

Hey all!

We do this ALL the time.  Sometimes, we don't even sleep overnight, we'll pop-up just for dinner in the camper.  My neighbors already think I'm a little "off" so they are used to it by now.  :screwy:  Dinner in the camper, oil changes at 2 in the morning, washing the car at midnight...  stuff like that.  I can't help it, I work weird hours and that's when I am awake.  They do say I am very quiet and I have never woke them up.

Go camping in the driveway!

I would have gone and had a talk with them if I had know. ;)  :D   Well maybe you wouldn't want me to talk to them. :yikes:

Thanks All,

It has been two weeks from the time we opened it up in the driveway for a weekend of fun with the grandkids. They loved it. We used our low lying barbeque for our fire ring. It was great! Even had the neighbors over. They had TV, Radio, neighbors kids in for a visit and so on. I think next year I will put it in the back yard for the same deal. Kind of like another camp grounds.

Thanks Again, I know I can always count on you all!

I am glad you had a good time. :)   Any chance that you will make it to the 2005 Rally in North Carolina. :)

It wasn't really camping - but my sister and brother-in-law used our Marshmallow (Jayco Eagle 14SO) as a guest house in their driveway for a couple of weeks this past summer.  The lucky "house guests" were able to have their own space in the camper - with the fridge and all - and a hot tub not 15 feet out the front door!  How's that for camping in the driveway!!  :-() Rae
