I have a Radio Shack programmable NOAA weather radio and am having trouble getting it to receive weekly tests and alerts.  Ever since I purchased the unit it never has received the weekly test and barely receives any alerts.  I do not have an outdoor antenna, only the fully extended OEM antenna.  Any suggestions?  Also, anyone have the codes for the Hampton Roads Virginia area?

Thanks

I think that's the same one I have, luckily I've never had to use it, but I better check to see if I can get anything.  I use it to listen to music, and if weather would get bad, I'd change... another thing to add to the list to do things.

Sounds like the unit is defective to me. Could also be set to the wrong SAME code (if equipt). Here is a listing for the S.A.M.E. codes: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/nwr/indexnw.htm

The general frequecnies can be found here: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/nwr/nwrbro.htm

Below, I've put a link to the NOAA NWS weather site for you. On the left side of the home page are links to SAME Coding, Station Listings and Coverage Maps (amongst other things). It is interesting to note that in the lower 48 states, there is NOT complete coverage by NOAA. Your radio might be working, but the area you are in may not be covered. You can find this out by clicking on the coverage maps and selecting you own area. Whenever someone is about to purchase a NOAA weather radio, I tell them to check the NOAA site first and see if there's coverage in the area where it will be used. Because of the way radio waves are affected, you might be able to pickup a signal from another area better than the one for the area you are in. It's good to test them all, periodically, to insure your radio is still receiving the strongest signal.

NOAA National Weather Service

We have the WR196T by Oregon Scientific (originators of the radios) purchased from Valco Electronics, an authorized and stand-up dealer for Oregon Scientific devices.
