Geocaching and terrorism?

Second thoughts about someone finding a cache I hid and suspect it may be dangerous has pretty much stopped me from putting out new caches.  My favorite container was a strong and secure ammo box, used in many of the caches I had found.  Even with a geocache sticker, it could easily be mistaken.  

For safety reasons, I have gone to just virtual or micro caches when we are on vacation.  I usually go with my kids, and although it was more fun to find the "treasure", we still have fun with the safer forms of caches.

Almost the same thing happened a town near where I live.  One was left in the bushes next to the Police Station.  Permission was received from the Chief of Police but he failed to pass on the information that it would be there.  (small town)  Next shift found it and bomb squad blew it up.  Haven't heard who is paying for the episode.

In our area (Salt Lake), we had a guy observed placing a cache under a bridge entering Hill AFB.  With security high at DoD installations, a suspicious cacher might find themselves at the wrong in of a gun.  No harm no foul in this case, but times have changed a bit.

Very interesting on the bomb deal.  I can see how folks could get alarmed.

Now keep in mind that this is not all cachers.  I am talking about a specific group of cache hiders.

The problem I see is the hiders of caches tend not to think about what a cache finder might look like to someone that is not familiar with the game.  I don't know about you, but if I didn't cache but saw someone looking at their GPSr going around and around in circles, it would look kind of odd and would attract my attention.  The hiders really need to think about what the non-cacher sees.

I am also seeing more caches where stealth is required to go undetected.  There are some people that do stealth very well, but there are others that just look suspiscious when trying to go into stealth mode.

With two kids and DW in tow, the only place we can do stealth would be Walmart!  It is interesting to see things going to the next level.  Particularly in urban settings.    Fun, but I suspect there will be more and more "incidents" since people are automatically suspicious these days.
