Received our BAL Leveler from Santa.   :p No directions on how to use it.  Can you please give us some handy hints, secrets, etc on them.

Thanks

The BAL is really quite simple to use. Slide it under the low side, be sure the rod is in the little notch out and turn the wrench supplied with it till level. If  you have larger tires be sure they are not low or the BAL will either be a very tight fit, or not fit.

Some have said on grass it can be a hard slide to get it  around the tire,we haven't had that happen yet. To remedy that I've read the suggestion to put plywood under that tire.

The BAL is a great time and frustration saver, you'll love it!

Marcy told you correct.  Just slide it around the tire on the low side of the trailer and then crank it up until it is level. :)

You CAN use a BAL on a 12" tire, although it states 13 to 15" tires. However, I would use contact cement or something similar to glue pieces of rubber to the metal pads that contact your tires. The reason for this is that with 12" tires if you need to raise it up to near the upper reaches of the BAL, it will have a tendency to kick out. This happened to me and my Jayco twice until I reread the specs and saw that it really was meant for a larger tire. Not sure if this is a problem with larger size tires or not. Since posting that problem here and on another site, I've heard from 3 others that have experienced a similar tendency for the Bal to "kick" out (be pushed outward by the angle of the BAL to the tire), but I never emailed to ask if they were using it with tires that were sized within its specs!
I find it very easy to use and built a box to carry and store it in, although I am seriously considering the carrying bag mentioned in another thread!
I'm sure you will enjoy the ease of the BAL!

We've been using the BAL for 3 seasons now. Our tires are 14" and have no kickback. Tight fit at times depending on the surface, but have not run into not being able to use it.

For us, we:
  • spot the camper where we want it.
  • slide the BAL in place on the low side and chock the high side
  • level front-to-back with the tongue jack
  • level side-to-side with the BAL
  • raise the roof
  • drop the stabilizers in place
  • finish the set-up
  • get something cold to drink:D

Thanks you all.
Sounds pretty easy.  We are sitting down with our calender today for next year.  Can't wait to use them.

Be sure to put some lubricant (white grease, etc.) in the cup into which the end of the threaded rod goes.  This will make the leveler easier to raise with the ratchet and also cut down wear and tear on the rod.

 Happy Camping!

thanks for the tips...i've only had to use mine once (I live in flat florida) and a young and strong guest just went at it.

from the "dumb questions" department:

can you give me some examples of "pieces of rubber" so I can start looking around?

Go to your local Ace Hardware (Locally owned!!!) and ask for some pieces of Rubber Gasket material in their plumbing dept. These come in a box, but most stores also sell them by the piece. They are about 6 inches square. I cut one in half and using a good cement suitable for Rubber to Steel bond, glued a half to each of the metal plates that cradle the tire. Position the strips towards the lower edge so that they contact as much tire as possible.
Since doing this I've had no instance of the BAL being pushed out by my Jayco's wheels.
I believe most any rubber material would do, it just needs to create a little extra friction on the smaller diameter tires.

In greasing the BAL screw, can it be the same kind of lubricant one uses to grease the trailer ball?

Yes you can use that type of grease.  I do.:)
