We've been seriously thinking -- again -- about getting out of the 'ol tent and into something a little better. We toyed with the idea of a popup, and are still kind of considering one, but we're more inclined to go directly to a hybrid. We've narrowed it down to a select few, with the KZ Coyote 22CT as the front runner.

From what I've been able to determine KZ makes a pretty good camper; they're a bit spartan, and a little light on the visual appeal (the "glitz" factor), but they seem to make a solid product and care about their customers. However, I'm having a hard time determining if the price I'm being quoted is all that good. Here's the configuration I'm looking at:

-- microwave
-- A/C
-- AM/FM/CD stereo
-- awning
-- monitor panel
-- TV Antenna
-- gas bottle cover
-- sink cover
-- 6 cu ft refrigerator
-- oven
-- outside cook center
-- exterior shower
-- stabilizer jacks
-- spare tire

Basically, a loaded unit. For the one remaining 2005 22 CT on the dealers lot my price would be $14,300. If I want a 2006 it would be $14,800. From what I'm able to determine that may or may not be a good price. I've seen MSRP prices for that config fall between the low 18K's to the low 20K's (if they list an MSRP at all!). I've also seen the "sale" prices go between an even 14K to the mid 16K range (for the fully loaded units configured with the options listed above).

So, after all this info what's the windbags REAL question?  :D  It's actually two; what do you think of the KZ's, especially the 22CT, and how does $14,300 for the 05 and $14,800 for the 06 stack up in the real world?

We bought a 2005 KZ Frontier in Sept 2005 and have generally been pleased - had a minor leak that the dealer promptly repaired but otherwise no problems.  They do stand behind their products IMHO.
I had good luck dealing directly with the factory when asking for their MSRP information.   They sent me an excel spreadsheet with a breakdown of upgrades and costs.  What is new/better with the 2006?
You might check out the K-Z owners group site:

FWIW you can get a K-Z Frontier for not much more than the price you were quoted for the Coyote......

There would be a family mutiny if we went for a travel trailer. :yikes: I'm having a hard enough time getting my kids to even want a hybrid!

I have three daughters, all of which have been camping since they were in diapers (they're 13, 15 and 17 now though). We have always tent camped, and they absolutely love it. AAMOF, the more primitive the better as far as they're concerned. Well, there one concession is that the toilets have to be the kind that flush -- not pits -- but other then that they love dry camping in tents.

However, the old bones are starting to rebel a bit, and the setup/tear down of a tent site is getting a little tiring. For me a PU would be just fine, but my "better half" sees that there's only a few grand difference between a well equipped PU and a decent hybrid and wonders why not just skip the PU entirely. When you crunch the monthly payment numbers it's hard to argue with her, so it appears as though we're going hybrid (besides, they store a lot more then a PU does and there's far less work setting them up too). But a hybrid is as far up the ladder as we want to go right now -- at least with the tent ends it will still feel like camping. :D

I currently have a nice large PU which has plenty of room for the 4 of us plus the dog.  Although TTs are in the same ballpark cost wise, they just can't compare with the usable space & camping feeling found in Pop-ups & hybrids.  For one thing, those beds take up room in the TT that is usable space in a PU or hybrid.  One of these days I can see my family moving from the PU to the hybrid, but I don't expect to ever go to the TT.

One thing you need to consider, if you haven't already, is the tow vehicle.  What is it rated to pull?  Will they hybrid be ok or do you need to look at pop-ups for a lighter weight?

Hope you bought it for $14,300. We looked at the Coyote 16C and it was listed $18,540!!!!!!!! Don't understand WHY the price difference. Do you know?

Well,
After our first trip out and back,I must say I really like the camper. The 23,(formally known as the 23CT),preformed very well all systems worked above expectation.I didn't even get a chance to have a major sewage isssue!(Thanks to a thoughtful camp-neighbor).
looking forward to the next trip out.

KZ manufacturers travel trailers and 5th wheels. They sell a hybrid called the Coyote.

See all the K-Z line up at www.kz-rv.com
Not many dealers carry them but they are worth check out IMHO.
