proper length of cable for break away switch

I just had a break away switch added to my PU What is the proper length of the cable to be attached to the TV? Longer/Shorter than what?

The cable on my breakaway switch extends about a foot in front of the  hitch on the trailer and snaps on to a ring on the hitch pin.....I wouldn't make it any shorter than that........
