Hoping someone local to the area might be able to help me out. Have to bring DD to college in Rochester the end of August. Sure would prefer a campground to a hotel and turn the trip into a little vacation. Any recommendations? I think Letchworth SP is about an hour south but I was hoping for something closer. Someone at PUX campout recommended Stoneybrook SP but that seems just as far. Has anyone tried the Canandaigua Koa?

I stayed at Hamlin Beach about 20 years ago. It was a nice place then, right on the lake. What school is your DD looking at?

She'll be attending Rochester Institute of Technology. I saw Hamlin Beach SP on the map but thought it might be too far away, but the location looked really nice (on the lake). RIT is actually south of Rochester and it seems we (parents) have to move her in and then attend a 2 day orientation with her (so at least 4 trips back and forth). Then she will have 5 days of student only orientation before classes begin (on Labor Day). I had wanted to stick around for a day or 2, predicting that she will need some "emergency items" that she didn't know she needed (or couldn't fit). The week long orientation seems like a weird setup to me but that's the way RIT does it - get the kids used to a week of hanging out together, no school work, then bam a full week of classes. I hope she transitions well.

I went to school at RIT (Industrial Engineering '86). Hope she does well there. I still think its a great school. Just after I graduated we did a bicycle camping trip starting at RIT and ending at Hamlin state park.
