Hi Cruiserpop

You should drop a line to copcarguy,in the COTOC group.
He knows that area like the back of his hand.
Hope this helps.

Hey cruiserpop... I just came across your post, I hope that you get to read it before you leave.

I live in Fishkill right now. Not sure what type CG you're looking for (hookups, pools, lake, etc.) , or how far off 84 you're willing to go...

Newburgh/NYC North KOA is a safe bet off I-84 at exit 7N. It's probably the closest (and nicest!) off of 84. http://www.koa.com/where/ny/32102/ There is a lot of construction in that area, as they're connecting 84 directly to 87 (NYS Thruway). Keep an eye on the signs, as that section changes all the time.

If you're willing to travel farther off 84, there is Mills-Norrie State Park in Staatsburg. No hookups, but bath house with hot showers. Sites are small, roads are bumpy, but real nice if you like to get "back to nature".

Wilcox Park is also available in Red Hook, NY. Very nice park, 27 sites, 10 with W/E. This is even farther off 84. http://dutchessny.gov/CountyGov/Departments/DPW-Parks/PPwilcox.htm

Of course you have the Fishkill Wal-Mart off exit 13 to go "parking lot camping" if all you're doing is passing through. There is also Snow Valley CG off exit 13, but I am only telling you it's there. Personally, I would feel better sleeping in Wal-Mart's parking lot!

For some reason, exit 13 has become hotel central.  When I moved up here in 1985, there was just Holiday Inn, and I think 2 traffic lights.  Now there must be literally 2000 hotel rooms in the area.  If you don't want to go camping, I am 100% SURE you will be able to find a hotel room off exit 13.

I have pictures of these CG's in my webshots page, click the link under my profile.

I hope this message got to you in time before you left! Happy Camping!

thanks guys. traveling virginia to ma, visiting the folks. we normally go 81-84-90, but it's 12 hours, and the kids get so the parents want out of the car. fishkill looks like a good break point to camp overnight, but the little snippit on construction is even more interesting. between the lower 84 construction down to 2 lanes northbound and one lane southbound, now conneecting 81  to another interstate, may just have to bite the bullit and do 95-jersey turnpike.

Hey cruiserpop...  the construction where 84 and 87 meet is not bad.  There's no real hangups or traffic jams, it just gets confusing there (really getting off 87 not 84) so I told you that as a precaution should you want to go to the KOA.  I would take 81 to 84 to 90 over 95 and the NJ Pike ANYDAY.  81-84 is SO much less stressful of a ride!  Even with 81 down to one lane (it gets a little crazy in between those concrete barriers doesn't it?) :eyecrazy: I would still take that over 95.  When are you leaving??  We'll be at the Newburgh/NYC KOA 8/1 - 8/3 and then we're going to Ashburn, VA 8/6 and 8/7 to see my sister.  Maybe we'll be passing each other!!  :D

Hello again cruiserpop!

My sis & bro-in-law are moving down to Ashburn that weekend.  I'm towing the biggest U-Haul trailer with my van stuffed to capacity.  Looks like I'll be making this trip very frequently to visit my sis.  Now can YOU give ME some campground suggestions around your area??  Thanks again and have a safe trip.

PS - where did you decide you're going to stay around here?

copcarguy

Hey cruiserpop!

Just wondering how you made out on your trip and where you decided to stay...  We had a great trip to VA.  Stopped at Bass Pro Shops new store as a break on the way home.  Other than that drove non-stop, and with my van's 35 gal tank didn't have to stop for gas!
