Got a great deal on a '96 Jayco 1206 because air does not work. The heat strip and fan in the unit work fine, but when you switch over to A/C it make a weird buzzing sort of sound. I'm hoping this is something relatively easy to fix. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to what this may be?

Sounds like a fifteen dollar starting capacitor to me, or low voltage. Check that the AC is getting at least 108 volts getting to it.

But in some cases, an older compressor may become locked-up or stuck.

This happened to my 78 Palomino, and the neighbor added a "Hard Start" capacitor to mine about ten years ago.  Before adding the hard start capacitor, the unit would buzz for a couple of moments dimming the lights in the PU, stop buzzing for a moment, re-try starting the compressor with the buzz, and after about the third attempt to start the compressor, it would stop trying, and just the fan would run. About three or four minutes later, the same routine of trying to start the compressor would start all over again.

With the Hard Start capacitor, you can add to the circuit to free the compressor, and remove after it is freed up. My neighbor being in the AC, electric, and plumbing biz always had one in is work truck for test purposes to check home AC compressors.

You can also keep it in there (like I did) for that extra "boost" to turn over the compressor each time, and for low voltage conditions common at some campgrounds.

As I said, it has been in my DD's PU  (I gave this PU to my DD and SIL about three years ago) for the past ten years, and the AC still works great to this day.

I just looked on line, and the  "Super 7" Hot Start capacitor costs about $ 43.00. You can do a Yahoo search using Supco SPP7S. This was the one my neighbor installed in mine, but there are other manufacturers of these things, and some are cheaper than this one.

Hope this helps ya', and good luck.

What brand of AC is it?:)

This is a DuoTherm unit. Sounds exactly like the same problem. Tries to start then just kicks over to fan. Dims the lights in the PU when it tries.
