How does the weight of an air cond. effect the raising and lowering of the roof? I've had 2 different people with fairly new units tell me that when lowering the roof sometimes if they let go of the crank the roof continues to lower (kind of dangerous if your tucking in the tenting :yikes: ) After this summers heat I would really like air, but this concerns me.

I believe it's somewhere between 90 and 120 pounds depending on the model.  I'm sure there will be some members who have added AC after purchase and give you a before and after.  I did not have AC on my Carmel, and the strange thing is that my new Newport with AC seems easier to lift than the old one did.  Could be there's a difference in the weight of the roof from Grand Tour to Highlander series.  I would have thought it heavier, but perhaps not.

Regardless, my dealer made me a socket from a spare crank, and I am going to be using a Craftsman drill to do all my lifting.   :p

There is nothing to be concerned about.  You should always turn the crank clockwise for a click or two when you stop lowering your roof, this engages the clutch so that the roof doesn't come down while you are tucking.  This information is in your owners manual.  The roof is heavier and harder to crank with AC on it.:)

Thanks, I guess I've been lucky. I never have turned it before tucking. ;)

We have an AC and have never had the roof keep lowering while we're tucking.  I always thought an AC on a PU was a waste of $, but now that we have one, I love it.  Makes camping in summer heat not an issue, where before we'd think twice about going because of heat.
