I was in Italy for the last two weeks for a work issue. I happened to be driving down a street and saw a sign for a campground. I am not quite sure they think of camping the way most of us do.

Ha!

I think I'd rather stay home and mow the lawn!

The picture gives a whole new meaning to "parking Lot style" campground! We in the USA/Canada have some REALLY nice campgrounds.....all things considered.

Talk about dreary! With a setup like that I wouldn't even bother to go camping.

It looks like a KAO-Krampground All Over:eyecrazy:

DH's uncle was visiting us from Palermo, Sicily, had never seen a PU or our huge campgrounds. We opened up ours to show him and we just kept rolling around on the king bed like a little kid. It is amazing how much we take for granted here with our wide open spaces. It was fun to see all of his reactions to our day to day experiences. The one I the most was the drive up teller at the bank with the vaccum hose. He videotaped the whole transaction. Too funny.

We were in Germany a three years ago.  Same thing there.

Yep these are Europpean campgrounds. Sadly but true.

Some backup information:
Europe has a much higher population density than the US and there are hardly any SPs or NPs. And most NPs are nature reserves blocked for access except hiking.
Most camp grounds are private on private land and since land is very expensive the owners try to get as much out of it.
You are lucky when there are more than 10 feet distance between the campers.
No camp fires
No noise
No nothing
Just HORRIBLE!!!!!!!

That is why I love these campgrounds here in the US. Especially the NPs and SPs where you are in the middle of nowhere with only nature around.
You may find a few like the US ones in countries like Scandinavia but they are very rare. We had a hard time to find them and did not go Camping very often back then when we still lived in Europe.

The picture above is an extreme example but here are some very typical campgrounds from Europe:

All I can say this:
Thank you America. This is a great country for going camping.

Believe it or not, I have seen campgrounds like this in the US.  They do not have to be as bad as they seem, either.  We stayed in one KonKrete Kampground(TM) in New Mexico that had, of all things, cinderblock walls between campsites!  It may seem terible, but the campground had shade trees.  It was the only shady place for hundreds of miles in all directions.

All but one of the pictures you posted were close to the shore.  I have seen more than one campground in the US where being able to walk to the beach was the sole attraction.  One was in York Beach, Maine, where most of the campsites would barely fit a picnic table between the sites.  The difference in the US is that ten miles inland, there were 3-4 far more pleasant campgrounds within 20 minutes' drive of the same (or better) beaches.

Austin (Still not choosing one of those for camping)
