i Pod/i Boom question

We got DD an i Boom (like a "boom box" but you put your i Pod into it) for Christmas.  DH was curious about the FM reception on it and hooked it up.  The FM is OK but the volume is strange as it goes from nothing to rather loud with no quiet range in between.

Does anyone know anything about these things?

Tena, go to Amazon.com do a search for ipod iboom and you can read other's opinions on the boom box. Apparently the volume controls is one of the complaints... Also, there's a review on Playlist http://playlistmag.com/reviews/2005/03/iboomrev/index.php that comments on the volume controls
