This is my first winter in Oregon.  For the past couple of weeks on the weather reports they would mention the possiblility of "frozen fog".  Now I am not stupid by any means, , but the only thing I could picture was a mass of fog freezing in space and shattering like broken glass when hit.   Try as I might I could not get that image out of my head!!  DH came home yesterday from his brothers and said while hanging up X-mas lights it started to freeze rain.  He mentioned to his brother to hurry up so they could get out of the rain.  His brother said rain?  This is freezing fog!!!   So what we called sleet or freezing rain in Iowa, in Oregon it is called freezing fog.  What does your area call it.   I might add that when going up above the freeze line in the mountians---seeing the "frozen fog" on the pine trees is one of the prettiest sites I have seen!!!

We have freezing fog and sleet and freezing rain.  Freezing fog is fog that freezes to the surfaces it touches ex: the fog comes up off of the river and then freezes on the trees along the river.  Sleet is water droplets that are frozen on the way to the ground.  Freezing rain is wet when it falls and then freezes on contact.  Freezing rain is the worst, it causes many car accidents, power line failures, etc.:)

I have never heard of "frozen fog".  Of course, I grew up in Iowa so that may be why.   ;)   In TN I've always heard it called freezing rain or sleet; the weather forecasts usually call for a "wintry mix."

I was hoping your question was about food.  My father called them spuckies; PJay's folks call them hoagies, my kids call them subs.  The correct term, of course, is grinders.

Here in St. Louis, we have freezing rain, sleet, & snow. The icy fog is referred to as frost..?  Good Ole Jack Frost..! Tomorrow is the first day of winter...Looks like a cold one this year!

We have frost, which is dew that freezes.  The freezing fog only happens once in a while and did this week.  The river is partly frozen and the air was so cold that fog comes off of the river.  It looks like regular fog, but if it comes in contact with a cold surface it freezes, like freezing rain, only the moisture starts out from fog not rain.:)

In SoCal we call it "isagtidlt".
"I sure am glad that I don't live there"  :D

in so. cal we don't have freezing anything :S  oh we did have hail a couple of times...is that like frozen rain?

Is frozen fog anything like rime ice? I've heard of something frozen being called that here....but then frost (not hoar frost) is an event when it happens here.

Hey SoCal people, speak for yourselves. Up here in Lancaster if there is any water on the driveway, sidewalk, etc from sprinklers or rain, you can rest assured that going out to get the paper in the morning you Will slip and slide on ice. Got down to 16 degrees last weekend. I know that is not like alot of the other members here that see sub zero temps, but to SoCaler's that's cold!  Especially when you consider that 75 miles away from me people are surfing.

OMG!  The lowest we've gotten here in Sack-Of-Tomatoes (Sacramento) this season is, I think, 41 degrees!

Granted, by all accounts, this is a mild winter.  The middle of the night should be down to the 30's by now...
