My oldest DS started firefighter academy 2 weeks ago.  He is loving it and has such a passion for it.  He has eight weeks of training and then goes onto the EMT portion for two years of more schooling.  He comes home each day with such excitement and babbles on and on about the days events.  He goes to Schoolcraft College here in MI and they run it military style.  It is amazing on how much he has learned in just this two weeks.  I could not be more proud of him.

I looks like you raised a fine young man.  You have every right to be proud of him.  I hope he enjoys his career and has the best of luck.

You should be proud of him. Fire fighting is a very honorable profession. My dad retired from our town fire dept. with 30 years service. He was an enginier and drove one of the pumper trucks.

Look out! Once it is in the blood, you can't get it out. I did it for twelve years, and still long to do it once more, but it didn't pay my expensive tastes.

It is so great that he has something to motivate him. There are an awful lot of young people that have a very hard time becoming motivated.

He seems to be a fine example of a young man that has his head screwed on right. You should be very proud.

I'm sure that your enthusiasm and excitement help to keep that fire burning within him.

Here in So. CA that is a very highly sought after and very competitive profession.  Reasonable pay, even better hours, a pension, and the many "fringe" benefits.

Virtually ever firefighter in So. CA proudly displays their affiliation with a window sticker on their vehicles.  And they tend to live in the best, (most exclusive, and expensive), neighborhoods, and always have the best toys!

My uncle was a regular Joe, (not an EMT) at the Malibu station on Pacific Coast Highway for over thirty-five years, a wonderful career.

MY dd's future husband has been working at our local FD for right at 6 months now. He took a 3 month leave of absense from his construction job to attend EMT school last fall 2004 with a chance of getting a firefighters job later down the road. Last July he was hired by Burlington, NC fire dept after 2 months of interviews and all that stuff. He attended Burlington's firefighter school for 3 months. Military style also. started in August 2005. ran and worked out each day during the coolest time of the day.. class work was during the hottest times. They ran first day 1 mile.. then by the end of school they ran 5 miles a day and did the fireman's challege each day as PT.. Thats carrying a hose and climbing the 4 story fire training tower steps each day and doing a bunch of stuff connected to firefighting, I know I could have not done at all. After 3 months he had dropped around 20/25 lbs but he had bulked up too. NOW he works 24 on and 48 off.. Works in construction on his days off and is the happiest I have seen him in the 3 years he has dated my DD.. This job changed his life for the better as far as I am concerned.
He is in the process of buying a house NOW and like I said he is the happiest I have seen him... NOW if he will just get her a ring and finish paying for her degree...LOL
