I wish I could remember where I saw it but surfing the web I came across an insurance company that provides liability insurance for camping.  In such a litigious world I guess you can't even enjoy the great outdoors without someone finding a way to sue you.  My question is, do you carry specific camping liability insurance and if so, in what amount?

abbear

Uhhhh... in a word - no.  If i recall correctly my homeowners would cover when unhitched and my auto when pulling.

This was my understanding as well.  I have been unable to find the website I was refering to but did find this one that states:

"Campsite Liability Coverage:
This coverage is like a homeowner's liability policy that provides coverage while you're on the road. It covers claims that may result from slip-and-fall accidents that take place in your RV and immediate campsite. As well as any injuries or damage that result from fires, explosions, dog bites or miscellaneous accidents."

As an insurance agent I can help you with this one.  All STANDARD ISO home owner policies will provide you with liability coverage any where that you are usings as a residence premises.  This could be a camp site, or a wedding reception hall etc.  However if you are renting a seasonal or permanent campsite it should be added to your existing home owners or tenants policy as and additional location.

Check your policies and agents, but I think abbear is right.  I know I had to specifically add comprehensive coverage on the auto policy.  The liability comes automatically when hooked up, but my policy didn't cover any of my stupid mistakes without the additional coverage.  If you are worried about being sued, make sure the liability limits on your Homeowners policy are high enough.

I can't imagine your camper would be responsible for you getting sued.  Most likely it would be something you did and therefore covered on the appropriate policy.

As always, I am not a lawyer or an insurance agent so check with the appropriate people in your locale to be safe!

Yes, I carry separate insurance, I have full coverage on my PU, for which I paid $3500, and I insure it with my auto insurance, about $87 a year. I consider that a good deal, and my auto insurance company has been great, I have been with them for at least 20 years. The PU is a 2002, and has had probably not been used more than 15 times, but it is going to get used more this year!!

Though there are several scenarios where your home or vehicle insurance would cover a camper, it does not always.  I don't recall what they are at the moment.

However, I opted to get a separate policy.  With State Farm (both cars, house), it is just over $10/month for our Jayco 23B.

Thanks for all the great replies.  I think I have to spend some time with my agent.  By the way ZAMBONI I checked out your website, that is some fantastic home theatre!  All you need to do now is hook your computer up to it for some super surfing.

Thanks!  Actually, I'm thinking of throwing together a MAME box -- the only video games I'd want to play, are the old ones like Defender, Donkey Kong, etc... the sort that you can play with the MAME emulator, and a low-end PC :)
