Looking to buy a Starcraft Meteor because I have a Subaru Outback with a towing capacity of 2000 lbs.  Does anyone out there have an opinion on the Starcraft Meteor and does anyone tow it with a car?  I hear the dry weight is 1200 and the GVWR is 2000.

Thanks,

Dean

Have you checked some of the other pop-up forums?  Some others are more active on some subjects.  Check out PopUp Explorer, there's many folks there that are really up on the different models.

Sorry I can't help with the pup, but I do know a couple people that have Starcrafts and like them.

As has been mentioned, you do need to add up the weight of your camper & cargo.  Also, it was mentioned that you need to subtract passengers and vehicle cargo.

Not necessarily...

It is possible that your TOW capacity is not entirely limited by your VEHICLE capacity.

In most vehicles, like trucks & SUV's, you subtract your vehicle's "base weight" (almost dry + 1 naked, half-starved driver) from its GVRW, to determine how much it can tow.  For example, my 2002 V8 Explorer can tow 7,000 lbs with a canary driving it and an almost-empty gas tank.

In your case, it could be that your 2,000 tow capacity is NOT limited to your vehicle's GVWR minus the vehicle's base weight with an infant driving...  A quick Google turned up 4700 lbs as the GVWR of one Outback (random year).  This means, if your towing is 2,000, your vehicle and driver is under 2,700 lbs.

That said, there are some small popups.  Starcraft makes the 1700, which has a base (dry) weight of 1130 lbs.  You should be fine with THAT camper, fully loaded with wife, family, dog & kids.  As long as you like Top Ramen :)

My wife and I had a 1996 Starcraft Stardust 1021.  I can't find the specs now, and cannot remember exactly, but I seem to recall it was under 1400 lbs (don't remember if that was loaded or not!  It was a simple, small, but enjoyable camper).

Zamboni,  I have to check out this light Starcraft... Thanks as I am always looking at the light ones...
