Cheap Reflectic Mod for Bunk-End Windows

I was at the dollar store today and bought 6 car windshield reflector shields for a buck each. I cut them up and fit them into the bunk-end side windows of the pop-up. I only had to make one cut on each one, then i put that silver reflectic tape on the cut edges. I only needed 4 of the shields, so the mod to insulate my bunk-end windows only cost me around $5.00 which includes the little bit of reflectic tape i put around the cut edges. A roll of the reflectic at Home Depot is a little over $20.00 for a hole roll, so I saved some good money!!! ChaChing!!

Where did you get the reflectic tape and how much did it cost for the roll?  Is that also a Home Depot purchase?

I did this mod a few years ago, but I didn't use any tape.  I purchased accordian folding car sun shades and just trimmed them to fit the bunk end windows.  Here is a link to a picture of them.:)

tlhdoc ,

Quick question....what is that ontop of the bunks, the red?  Is that some other form of insulation?

I don't see any red on top of her bunks. They look aqua blue/green to me.

If that is what you are talking about, go to //www.popupgizmos.com. They are bunkend covers, and work great for reflecting sunlight/heat in the summer (reflective part out), and help keep bunkends warmer in the cooler months (reflective part inward)!

The reflective tape I got at home depot last year when i put an insulation blanket on the water heater, I think i paid around $4.00 for the roll.
The red cover on the PU is my solar balnket I got from Pop-Up Gizmos, the reflective side is down because it was cold out that day. Shinny side up when hot and shinny side down when cold out. As for the other side not having one on, thats because the day we got to the camp site the winds were 45 - 50 miles an hour, we had enough trouble just getting the tent on the bunk-end set-up.....GrizzlySSCamper  :sombraro:

The cover on top of the bunkend is the famous Pop Up Gizmo's Solar Cover, turned upside down.  They are reflective on the other side and when we camp in warm weather the reflective side faces out.  In cold weather the reflective side faces down.  They also help keep the bunkends clean.  We have had them for several seasons and I have been very happy with them.:)

Do you need the special reflextic tape or would duct tape work?

I've also thought about using the car windsheild "things", but none of the 20 or so dollar stores in my area have them  . Our local Walmart has them for $6/each, at that price X6 it would almost be cheaper to get a roll of reflectix and have custom fitting ones. I'm hoping that as it gets warmer the dollar stores will start to carry them cause those bunk ends do get HOT

Having never done either this may not sound like a very bright question...but I'll try anyway.

Wouldn't the reflextic rolled stuff sag down, where the car shades would stay intact?  Maybe I'm missing something?

The reflectix is virtually the same stuff as the windsheild shades, (two lawyers of silver foil with bubble wrap between) just not cut yet so it will stay up.

I purchased mine at Big Lots.  They were $2 or $3 each there.:)

Duct tape would work fine, its just to seal the cut end. The reflextic roll fits between the tent and the screen so it wont sag once you have it zipped back up..........Ed C.

I went to home depot and could not find the reflextic.  The only person I could find to ask was a young kid who had no idea what I was taking about.  I can only guess it has a different purpose and I wasn't describing it very well.

What department is it in?  I'll try again.

My local Home Depo does not carry it either (although their web-site does) Lowes does carry it for about $10 more, $28 for the 2ft X 25ft  $48 for the 4ft X 25ft rolls. I have not yet measured my zippered areas, does anyone know if the 2ft wide will do for the height of coleman bunk-end windows. We had a nice warm day last week and I did open her up to air out but put her down before remembering to measure :eyecrazy: .
