have an 1986 Coleman. Electric brakes were an option at that time for my camper.
It is wired for the brakes. There is a coil of blue wire attached to the axel. The axel has a square mounting bracket on each end.
Can I add the brakes now?
And if so how hard is it

There are many who have added brakes.  The place to start is to get the numbers for the axle and contact the axle manufacturer (Probably Dexter, but NOT Coleman) to find out what brake kit to order.

Several here have made it a do-it-yourself project.  Because the axle has the mounting brakets, you don t need to replace the axle, which is quite a job (by comparison).

IMHO, I would not tow without brakes, so I would urge you to go forward either as a do-it-yourself or paying someone else.

jmcanzoI installed brakes last year on 2000 Santa Fe. Bought from dealer just so I knew I had right ones.  Dexter 7   Brake Asm. & Drum Hubs  $190.00. May find for less elsewhere just make sure everthing is included. Also replaced bearings to Timken.
The job was not too bad. Have Tekonsha Prodigy brake controller that can be moved between TV with ease.
