Wiring inverter to Suburban

Hi,

I have a 2005 Suburban now as TV and I use a 400W inverter to power stuff in the truck while enroute (PC, GPS, 3cu ft fridge, etc).

In the other TV I had (Trailblazer) there was a convenient power centre under the back seat so I could connect the high capacity clips directly to battery power to allow more power to the inverter than just the aux cigarette lighter connectors.

No such thing in the Suburban. Anyone know where a safe place with sufficient power is under the dash? I would rather not run wires through the firewall to the battery.

Thanks,

bj

Take a good look under your dashboard, there may allready be an existing access point through the firewall. I think an aftermarket remote starter setup goes through the firewall,  there may be others. Like you,I was leary of going that route as well.  When I really took a good look I found A wire running through a nice hole with a plastic gromet and everything. Be patient and don't give up, the people on this forum can give a lot of ideas.

I use my 400w inverter in the car all the time. I just plug it into the cig lighter recepticle.

I don't use anything extreme like a fridge on it though. I do run a 200w back massager with it. I've never blown a fuse. I'm actually a lttle surprised that thing will run a fridge. I have a 2500w inverter that I use in the camper.

I think if I were going to run anything serious in the car, I would wire the inverter directly to the battery and run a 110v extension cord into the vehicle. There is no wiring in the cab of my car that will handle 35 amps (I don't know about yours). That inverter is probably capable of 65A surge. That would require about a 4g wire to make the 15-20 foot run from the battery (around all the bends and turns) to the inside of the cab. The 110v side of the inverter demands less than 4 amps. That would only require a light weight household extension cord.
