sleeping bunk mods?

We have a 16 month old son and I am curious what people have done for sleeping arrangements. Has anyone done any mods to a bunk end or a pull out couch? Utilize some sort of railing to keep your child from falling out of bed? We took his portable pack-n-play and set it up on the pull out couch. Kind of hard for my wife to get him in and out.

With our daughter (now 22 months), we've always put her in a Graco portable playpen that sits on the other bunk -- easy to get in & out since it has a zippered door on the side that fastens from the outside.

We did buy a bed rail, meant to put on either side of a bed to keep a yougster from falling out, for our hybrid since the back bunk is "enclosed" except for the narrow entrance that the bed rail will cover.  We have not put her in there alone yet; last weekend she was still in the playpen for convenience (and because it was still cold, it helped ensure she stayed covered).

However, this month's trip, Memorial, we'll be having her sleep on the bunk by itself, with the rail.  I'd look into a couple of those rails to cover the front edge of the bunk - but ensure your baby cannot climb over or around them!

IF you tenting is not permanently attached to the bunkend, make sure the child can not slip down through the tenting and the bed.  Pool noodles make a good filler to put in the small gap between the tenting and the bed.:)
