World's Largest RV Park

I spent last week camping in the largest tent I have ever been in, in the middle of the largest RV park I've ever seen.

I'll give a couple of hints, then, I'd like to hear some guesses about where I was and why I was there.

Hint #1: The tent was a 400-bed monstrosity with military-style cots.
Hint #2: This was the only tent camping that I observed. Most campers were using travel-trailers, but I did see one or two motorhomes. Not a single 5th-wheel.
Hint #3: Many areas had electric and water, but many had only water, and many had neither water nor electric.

If these hints are not enough, I will add more until the secret is broken.

At first I thought it was that county jail in Arizona but no trailers there.  Then I though burning man in Nevada but no hookups there at all.

Aren't the FEMA trailers somewhere in Arkansas parked at the airport?  I believe there are about 3500 of them out there just sitting, as the new city codes will not allow trailers due to being in hurricane prone areas.  :eyecrazy:

I was staying at a FEMA camp in New Orleans, but the "largest RV park" I was referring to was the whole of residential New Orleans. There are functional FEMA-provided travel trailers located all throughout the city. In spite of news reports showing fields full of un-used travel trailers, many people have been able to take advantage of this "offer" and are living in trailers in their yards while they work on repairs to their homes.

I went there to volunteer for a week with a group of students from the college where I teach.

I was totally shocked to find that so much of the residential areas of the city are still devastated. Many areas are still without electricity. One of the most surprising things to me is the large areas of neighborhoods where little to no work is being done - nine months after the flooding. This is true in middle-class neighborhoods as well as the much-written-about "lower ninth ward."

Our group worked on removing house contents and gutting houses that were flood-damaged but that are otherwise restorable. Each of our teams had about 12 people, and it generally took us a couple of days to completely empty and gut a house. The houses we worked on had not been touched since the storm. You have no idea what a houseful of flood-damaged stuff looks like after sitting and molding for nine months. The refrigerators are the worst.

The reason I'm sharing this is to encourage everyone reading this to consider going down there and helping out if at all possible. There are many charity groups organizing this, and your help is desperately needed. If you want to know more about the group that I worked for, send me a message and I'll give you the information.

I agree. Holly and I went to Gulfport, MS, twice, and were very fulfilled ourselves, by putting in some time down there.
